Skąd bierze się niechęć do kultury popularnej?

Popular culture is a realm that is heavily mythologized, and generally considered to be shallow and worthless. This attitude reflects a lack of understanding of popular culture texts, treating them literally, and a misunderstanding of the conventions they use. Drawing on the theories of John Fiske, I focus attention on the still strong belief that popular culture imposes its messages on passive, unthinking consumers. I indicate that this is related to a contempt for its audiences. Therefore, like Fiske, I propose we reject the category of “mass culture” and consider popular culture as a means of promoting progress. As an example of a cultural text that breaks stereotypes, I focus on the Polish sitcom Ranczo (directed by Wojciech Adamczyk).

High modernism attempted to replace religious faith and its promise of the resurrection of the body, with the religion of culturalism and its promise to immortalise our individual biographies through texts and works of art. Once we realized that this promise would not be fulfilled, that we would be forgotten, and our works and texts would disappear amidst a flood of other works and texts, we turned with hatred against the religion of culturalism and its false promises, just as the Bolsheviks turned against ‘revealed religion’. Except instead of burning churches and killing priests, many of us – even those who once sought fulfilment in culture, members of the ‘Polish intelligentsia’– turned to politics, the media, and money, in search of earthly fulfilment.

The text combines the surreal pastiche of Ibero-American fiction in the style of magic realism with a critical essay on local cultural politics. The story’s protagonist is a charismatic mayor who, in pursuit of popularity, seeks to gratify the basest of tastes, which gradually leads to his city’s decline; following this, he falls victim to a mysterious illness. The author reflects on culturephobia in elites, concluding that the real source of their fear lies in the unpredictable power of art, which can unleash ridicule and reveal the significance of large-scale capital in maintaining the good reputation of many businessmen and politicians.

The text is a short sketch, a working draft, discussing the state of literacy, or rather reading tendencies in Poland. According to the author, the tendency to read is disappearing, becoming part of a continuum in an educational tradition that has undergone a final break as a result of the rapid transformation of that which is actual and real into that which is merely virtual. Bauman’s “liquid” times have been a plague to books and reading. We have put aside our books, stopped treating reading as an essential existential act. We have left the library for other churches (consumption, text messaging, acronyms), fallen victim to a cult of the “external”. “Aversion” presents a summing up of this sad state.

This is an instruction manual for maintaining social order. The instructions, whose implementation will lead to a proliferation in hostility towards culture, consider culture to be an expensive luxury that only benefits those who are professionally involved in its creation and dissemination and the socially privileged. The text does not focus on particular individuals or institutions, but looks with an ironic eye at the hostility towards culture in Poland’s social climate, and points to reasons for this state of affairs.

Internet as a tool for Polish pastoral centers in London

This article attempts to explore the use of the Internet for evangelization, catechesis and widely understood pastoral work in relation to the pastoral care of Poles living in exile in London. For methodological reasons, first it shows the position of the Catholic Church on the Internet, followed by a brief characterization of Polish immigration to the UK. In the centre of the article there is an analysis of websites and other communication tools used by the Polish parishes in London. The culmination of reflection is to present proposals and demands concerning the prospects of using the Internet in their future work.

Lying and Communication – Lying as an Anti-Communicative Act

A lie is incompatible with the objective state of affairs, meaning that it is an assertion divergent from the truth. It is an act of deliberately bringing someone into error; at its core is the offender’s free decision to express thoughts contrary to his own conviction on a given matter – the liar in fact says what is untrue not because he does not know the truth, but because someone to whom he transmits this message will accept as truth what is not. And he does so with the knowledge and intention of convincing someone that he knows the truth. However a lie is considered by some to be an ordinary means of communication, we can conclude that this is not so. There is no doubt that lying is an example of some kind of anti-communication. It is in fact an action which on the surface resembles an act of communication. Due to its nature, which is not to build up a community, but the realization of self-serving, unauthorized purposes, it does not deserve to be called a communicative action.

Article is devoted to Polish priests and religious bloggers. The author presents the results of a qualitative empirical research conducted among bloggers in Advent 2013. Analyzed was 247 notes from 27 blogs. By far the largest number of published posts at this time was devoted to considerations of all types to the Scriptures. In addition to reflections on the Word of God , there are also broader references to the main characters presented in the Liturgy of the Word of the day as well as those related to time of Advent retreat. A common theme was also an event of everyday life, very rarely occurred while controversial topics, such as the issue of gender, in vitro or abortion. The analysis of blogs has allowed the generalization that they are another forum for the exchange of thoughts and ideas, the first step to building a relationship with your readers and also a place to share faith and everyday life.
