When Marek Czyżewski suggested that I prepare a text on the sociological aspects of the Russo-Ukrainian war, I caught myself thinking about the need to comprehend the new social reality in which we have found ourselves since February 24, 2022. Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine has already changed the European security order, but it has also become a major challenge to global peace and security. For the first time since the end of World War II and the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, the world is on the verge of a new global military confrontation with real risks of the state-aggressor using nuclear weapons.

Paris: Aubier 1995, 358 stran, ISBN ISBN 2-7007-3659- 1 (reedice Paris: Flammarion 1998, 384 stran; ISBN-10 2080814001, ISBN-13 ??978-2080814005) The article provides a discussion on a book that, from the philosophical point of view, addresses the development of views on work and its place in society. The French author Dominique Méda reveals, via a detailed analysis of the views of economists, philosophers and social reformers, how the current understanding of work and its meaning for society and the members thereof was established over a relatively recent period of history. It documents that the view that we consider today to be completely natural, unquestionable and universally valid, is something of a historical exception that deviates from pre-existing practices and thought traditions. The author points out the contradictions that are latently present in the current perception of the value of work and which have come into sharp focus recently as humanity realises that the related promises are not being fulfilled. Dominique Méda points out the limitations and temporal conditioning of the current perception of the meaning of paid work and attempts to place this perception in a context that is not limited solely to the economic dimension of work. Jan Keller suggests that this book should be read from the contemporary perspective, i.e. in a situation where environmental policies are being questioned, the level of inequality is by no means decreasing, and a large number of employees are no longer threatened only by stagnation in their living standards, but by a significant decline.

The essay reflects on the coronavirus pandemic based on concepts introduced by analyst Nasimm Nicholas Taleb regarding unforeseen events. In the conclusion, he formulates several recommendations for the management of unlikely events that exert extreme consequences. With respect to the socio-political area, for example, he mentions the preparation of various reserves and the creation of analytical, preferably multi-disciplinary, teams that focus on estimating future developments. The author also emphasises the option of introducing a number of radical changes for the better in response to the pandemic crisis.

Promotion of foreign investment is a well-established practice in many countries with an inadequate capital base, and the benefits of this type of investment, particularly in the form of positive spillover effects on the domestic economic environment, have been repeatedly confirmed by numerous studies. However, still not enough attention is paid to the definition and actual content of the word “foreign” in the phrase foreign direct investment in the domestic environment. This methodological essay attempts to fill that deficit and, using the concepts of foreign and domestic roundabout investment, to propose a categorization of capital investment which would take into account both the actual origin of the investor and the actual place of production or provision of the service, as well as the perception of the product or service as foreign or local. The resulting categorisation matrix is then populated with concrete examples from Czech practice and commented on in detail. The matrix can close the gap in the current Czech literature, which concentrates on the terms “foreign” or “domestic” more than on their very substance and their material meaning.
