This review article deals with Steele Brand’s monograph devoted to the motivation of the Republican Roman soldiers in the context of the idea of citizen soldiery and civic militarism. From the reviewer’s perspective it is a starting point to illustrate a broader tendency, manifested in the graduał relegation of military issues to the margins of academic life, which is reflected in re-linking them with military institutions. Military academies were not established to conduct classical or even historical studies, and their primary goal is to educate officers, so this may lead to historiographical deformations resulting from ignorance of socio-cultural conditions.

Review of the book Clément Carbonnier − Nathalie Morel: Le retour des domestiques. Paris: Seuil, 2018, ISBN-10: 2021399044, ISBN-13: 978- 2021399042 The review considers a book by French authors devoted to the social and economic context of the development of domestic services in French households. Jan Keller presents a number of critical findings: domestic services exacerbate inequalities between women and comprise precarious work with greatly reduced circumstances in terms of employment protection and occupational safety. He further asserts that tax support provided in France to households that can afford to employ servants exacerbates social inequalities.

Review of the publication Kuchařová, Věra a kol.: Česká rodina na počátku 21. století. Praha: Sociologické nakladatelství, 2019. 300 pages, ISBN 978-80-7419-275-3 (The Czech Family at the Beginning of the 21st Century) Review of the book The Czech Family at the Beginning of the 21st Century published by the Sociological Publishing House and co-edited by the Research Institute for Labour and Social Affairs. Based on complex data, the authors of the book attempt to describe what constitutes the Czech family today and the various risks they face. They also address affordable housing for families and issues surrounding the education of children. Although the publication is diverse in terms of its content and is both interesting and readable, it is principally an anthology that lacks both an overall view and a comprehensive evaluation of the findings of the researchers. In this sense, therefore, the aim of the authors to describe the living conditions, relationships and needs of the Czech family was only partly fulfilled.

Review of the book Commun-Commune: penser la Commune de Paris (1871), published on the 150th anniversary of the Paris Commune. The author of the publication aims to reconstruct the entire spectrum of political ideas circulating in “Free Paris” in the spring of 1871. The analysis is carried out from the perspective of the political practices and partici-pants of events. The content of the studied ideas is considered only through the methods of their use and the consequences which influenced history. In the review this is interpreted as a manifestation of thinking close to the theore-tical concept of the “social history of ideas”. Another impor-tant aspect of the reviewed book is the reflections on the politics of memory and legends, i.e. a mythologized approach to the past understood as a source of cognitive errors that hinder the proper understanding of events.

The new Theoretical Practice review forum deals with the synthesis of the recent history of Poland by the American historian Brian Porter-Szűcs. The work, conceived as a counterbalance to the martyrological and self-centered narrative about Poland and Poles in recent decades, has provoked lively reactions. We invited to debate historians of various generations and academic circles, working in Poland and in the English-speaking world. They take up key issues for historical writing and the key concepts of Polish history. These are, among others, the challenges of synthesis, the limits of comparison and the scaling of the point of view and the position from which a historian, immersed in his own linguistic community or national culture, speaks. The work in question brings into view perks and perils of various positions of the writer towards the community of recipients. The forum participants point out the risks of using one’s own experiences and memories as a signpost in assessing historical events and the problem of writing history of ordi-nary people, often despite the author’s will, remaining a nameless mass. This forum is a great starting point for a discussion on these key issues of historical writing.
