Revitalization, as a method of intervention in deprived urban neighborhoods, hardly places itself in the arsenal of land-use planning methodology. Thereby it gets, mostly, to the category: instrument of repair, reactive. It is expected that the program of revitalization will trigger those of the endogenous resources that manage to overcome the effects of socio-economic degradation, and will change only that deprived part of the city, suppressing unfavorable course of things. The paper presents the observations and conclusions of the participatory programming of revitalization in two Polish cities that had been undertaken and carried out with regard to achieve change in land use of broader scale, beyond the requirement to restore the status quo and repair distorted functional and spatial relationships

Since the beginning of the 1990s, suburban areas of large cities in Poland (regardless their extension) have a specific demographic changes which distinguish them from urban and rural areas within the administrative boundaries. The decline of the volume of migration from rural areas to cities and change of their direction from urban into rural areas, especially from urban to suburban areas have caused significant changes in the age structure and vital statistics and, hence, population dynamics within communities surrounding major urban centers. The aim of research is to entail changes in the concentration of the population in the Krakow Metropolitan Areas. We analyzed the changes in the relationships between the main components of the population growth (natural increase and net migration) to determine the level of demographic surbanization processes in the zones of Krakow Metropolitan Areas. The analysis was conducted in communes in four time sections: 1988, 1995, 2002 and 2011. The study was funded by the National Science Center, awarded by decision number DEC-2012/05/B/HS4/04200 for the project „Transformation of selected social-demographic structures in Krakow Metropolitan Area”.

The procedure of depositing the library of the Bielany Camaldolese monastery in the Jagiellonian Library was rather complicated. Firstly, it required creating essential software and adjusting the final storage area in the library. Secondly, single items had to be removed from the shelves, cleaned, identified and correlated with corresponding records in the digital database. After that, the collection underwent massive disinfection and was transported to the main building of the Jagiellonian Library, where all the books were arranged on the shelves, in the original order. The last phase of this project involved electronic cataloguing in the Virtua library management system.

The conservation work connected with the shifting of the Camaldolese library from the Bielany monastery to the stacks of the Jagiellonian Library included: –The overview of the books and the evaluation of the state of preservation of the collection (conservation stocktaking), –Preservation involving the removal of dust and micro-organisms from the bindings of the books as well as from single pages, –The desinfection of the collection, –The preparation of the books for transport. One of the conservation problems that emerged during the execution of the project concerned the difference between the climatic conditions in the place where the books had remained so far and those in the stacks of the Jagiellonian Library. Another issue concerned the increased humidity level of the books. However, the most severe damage was caused by the attacks of insects which had fed on the books. In the situation where the majority of the books had been cleaned and dried but the question of moving them to the Jagiellonian Library still remained uncertain, it was decided that they should be cleansed of insects with carbon dioxide within the walls of the monastery. Especially for this purpose, a special system of “baloon chambers” was invented, all of which were made of PVC membranes. A separate issue of the project involved the preparation of the books for transport. The digital system of registering single volumes, developed in cooperation with the Jagiellonian Library, which allowed to identify particular books at every stage of the work (initial cleaning, inventory control, transport, desinfection, cataloguing etc.), provided an interesting solution to this problem. The last stage of the work consisted in the prevention and conservation of a collection of 23 volumes. The aim of this work was to invent methods of conservation that would cover the most frequent kinds of damages in the Camaldolese collection. The purpose of the project described above was to allow further preservation and safe cataloguing of the Camaldolese book collection in the Jagiellonian Library.
