Laboratory Works Designed for Developing Student Motivation in Computer Architecture

In light of the current difficulties related to maintaining the students’ interest and to stimulate their motivation for learning, the authors have developed a range of new laboratory exercises intended for first-year students in Computer Science as well as for engineering students after completion of at least one course in computers. The educational goal of the herein proposed laboratory exercises is to enhance the students’ motivation and creative thinking by organizing a relaxed yet competitive learning environment. The authors have developed a device including LEDs and switches, which is connected to a computer. By using assembly language, commands can be issued to flash several LEDs and read the states of the switches. The effectiveness of this idea was confirmed by a statistical study.

Forecasting TRY/USD Exchange Rate with Various Artificial Neural Network Models

Exchange rate forecasting is one of the most common subjects among the forecasting problem field. Researchers and academicians from many different disciplines proposed various approaches for better exchange rate forecasting. In recent years, for solving the stated forecasting problem artificial neural networks have become successful tool to obtain solutions. Many different artificial neural networks have been used, developed and still developing for even better and trustable forecasts. In this study, TRY/USD exchange rate forecasting is modeled with different learning algorithms, activations functions and performance measures. Various Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models for better forecasting were investigated, compared and the obtained forecasting results interpreted respectively. The results of the application show that Variable Learning Rate Backpropagation learning algorithm with tan-sigmoid activation function has the best performance for TRY/USD exchange rate forecasting.

Can we make Schools and Universities smarter with the Internet of Things?

Schools and universities stand up to the challenge the Internet of Things, which has the potential to significantly change teaching and learning. The learning and administrative processes and the relationships between all participants in education may benefit from the Internet of Things since the linked physical devices ensure connectivity of people and ensure their activity. The implementation of the Internet of Things in education, unlike other spheres, has a very important and difficult task. The Internet of Thing has to guarantee the creation of an environment that supports the acquisition of knowledge in a new, natural and effective way, consistent with the new realities and learners’ expectations. The questions of how and in what direction the Internet of Things will lead to changes in educational activities and processes have many answers and need discussions and debates. The objective of the current work is to answer these questions by presenting the concept the Internet of Things and consider its possible applications in education.

Core Processes Roadmap to Deploy the Higher Education Institution's Internationalization Strategy

Technological development, competition and globalisation are radically changing the landscape of higher education which maintains its crucial role in individual and societal advancement. Many higher education institutions are competing on increasing their attractiveness by providing innovative curricula, excellence in teaching and research opportunities. The paper attempts to tackle the push for stronger international presence which brings favourable conditions for internationalisation strategy at institutional level. Based on useful methods from quality management and business process reengineering, the author proposed a coherent organizational model for a higher education institution strategy, mainstreaming key areas as international mobility for students and staff, internationalization and improvement of curricula and new e-learning methods, and strategic cooperation, partnerships and capacity building with international stakeholders. The findings stress the benefits of a holistic approach in assuring the governance of internationalization strategy composed of three core processes groups - academic, research, and wider business relationships – so as to provide that process architecture is able to deliver a value added internationalised higher education offer.

Smart Homes with Voice Activated Systems for Disabled People

Smart home refers to the application of various technologies to semi-unsupervised home control It refers to systems that control temperature, lighting, door locks, windows and many other appliances. The aim of this study was to design a system that will use existing technology to showcase how it can benefit people with disabilities. This work uses only off-the-shelf products (smart home devices and controllers), speech recognition technology, open-source code libraries. The Voice Activated Smart Home application was developed to demonstrate online grocery shopping and home control using voice comments and tested by measuring its effectiveness in performing tasks as well as its efficiency in recognizing user speech input.

Visual and Computational Modelling of Minority Games

The paper analyses the Minority Game and focuses on analysis and computational modelling of several variants (variable payoff, coalition-based and ternary voting) of Minority Game using UAREI (User-Action-Rule-Entities-Interface) model. UAREI is a model for formal specification of software gamification, and the UAREI visual modelling language is a language used for graphical representation of game mechanics. The URAEI model also provides the embedded executable modelling framework to evaluate how the rules of the game will work for the players in practice. We demonstrate flexibility of UAREI model for modelling different variants of Minority Game rules for game design.

Investigation of Stator and Rotor Slits’ Effects to the Torque and Efficiency of an Induction Motor

Induction machines have a simple structure and are popular due to their wide range of use, however they have limited power factor and efficiency. Although the working principles of inductions machines have not changed for years, the materials and geometric structures used have undergone significant changes. In this study, slits were applied in the middle of the rotor teeth, rotor-stator teeth and stator teeth of a 7.5 kW induction motor. For these three situations, the torque ripple, iron losses, copper losses, inductance, phase current and voltage inducted in the windings and flux change were analyzed associated with the change in the slit width and slit height. Due to the fact that it is difficult to analytically calculate the slitted models created, they were analyzed by software which uses the finite elements method. The stator-rotor slitted structure determined as the optimum (the one with highest efficiency) and the original motor were compared with 2D and 3D analyses. According to this comparison, a decrease in torque rupture and loss of copper is observed. The motor’s torque increased by 27%, and efficiency increased by 4%.

Transverse Anisotropy and Dimensional Stability of Thermal Treated Beech Red Heartwood

This research is mainly focused on the impact of thermal modification on the transverse anisotropy and dimensional stability of native beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) and beech red heartwood. Applied to two time-temperature regimes, the first period of maximum temperature to 180° C and the second to 230° C. The factor of anisotropy in native beech wood is 1.29 and beech red heartwood is 1:24. Dimensional stability of the native beech wood is improved for 33.3% and beech red heartwood for 29.1%. The changing of the volume mass per thermal modification of 6% is too small and does not affect other properties.

Lotka-Volterra Model with Two Predators and Their Prey

In this paper will be observed the population dynamics of a three-species Lotka-Volterra model: two predators and their prey. This simplified model yields a more complicated dynamical system than classic Lotka-Volterra model. We will give the conditions under which one of the predators becomes extinct and when the coexistence between predators is possible. Given will be sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions for certain classes of Cauchy’s solutions of Lotka-Volterra model. The behavior of integral curves in the neighborhoods of an arbitrary integral curves will be considered.

Edge Detection using Multiple Ant Colony Approach

The gray level change between any two regions is described as an edge. This change is spread out among a lot of pixels. There are algorithms which can be used to detect edges. Some of them are designed in such a way that they can detect straight visible edges. Also, there were algorithms whose settings can detect partial edges. But it is very difficult to design an algorithm, which could detect partial edges and also correct edges. At the same time the algorithm should also have a setting to manage hidden edges. Multiple ant colony approach is a best method to get a good solution. This will be possible due to the cohabitation of various colonies. The activities of ant colonies that are coordinated by an interaction on the colony level is the basic idea of multiple ant colony approach.

Application of Agent Methodology in Healthcare Information Systems

The Gaia methodology for agent oriented analysis and design, Tropos is a detailed agent oriented software engineering methodology to explore each methodology's ability to present solutions for small problems. Also we provide an attempt to discover whether the methodology is in fact understandable and usable. In addition we were collecting and taking notes of the advantages and weaknesses of these methodologies during the study analysis for each methodology and the relationships among their models. The implementation of the Quality Costs Methodology in the Public Transport Enterprise in Macedonia

The implementation of TQM (Total Quality Management) strategy in the public transport enterprises in Macedonia means improving the quality of services through examination of business processes not just in terms of defining, improvement and design of the process, but also improvement of productivity and optimization of the costs of quality. The purpose of this study is to point out the importance of determining the quality of the transport services, its methods, and techniques for measurement of the optimization of business processes in particular. The analysis of the quality costs when providing transport services can help managers to understand the impact of poor quality on the financial results and the bad image it gives to the enterprise. In this study, we proposed and applied the model for better performance and higher efficiency of the transport enterprise, through the optimization of business processes, change in the corporate culture and use of the complete business potentials. The need for this methodology was imposed as a result of the analysis made in the company in terms of whether is it doing an analysis on the costs of quality or not. The benefits from the utilization of this model will not only lead to increasing the business performance of the transport enterprise, but this model will also serve as a driving force for continuous improvements to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.

The Role and Attitudes of Kindergarten Educators in ICT-Supported Early Childhood Education

In this paper we analyze the role and attitudes of kindergarten educators in the early ICT education. Our kindergarten survey among educators in Croatia showed the positive attitude towards ICT literacy in general, but it also showed that more than one third of educators has neither positive nor negative attitude towards the issue of early ICT education. The research results are compared to the most recent findings for other countries – Turkey, Hawaii, Sweden, Belgium, China, Greece, Portugal, UK, Australia, Israel, Chile, Slovakia, Singapore and Malaysia. The conclusion is that educators in countries that are still not obliged to use ICT in the preschool classroom, generally understand the necessity of their own ICT education and motivation to transfer their knowledge to the youngest learners.

Blade Group Fatigue Life Calculation under Resonant Stresses

The results of the simulations of the blade group resonant stresses in a FE environment and fatigue life calculation are presented in this paper. Numerical calculation for determination of natural frequencies, mode shapes and dynamic stresses, based on FEM and NISA package is used. Analyses are made on the blade group with three blades with rectangular cross section and typical turbine blades with taper, pretwist and asymmetric airfoil as well. The influence of the position of the lacing wire on the resonant stresses is analyzed. Three-dimensional finite element models of the blade group are made by using twenty node isoparametric solid elements. The number of degrees of freedom is different for each model (more than 30000 DOF). The fatigue life and consequent life prediction according the stress load history of the blades is made. The results of the investigation are given in tables and graphics.

ADVANTAGES FROM ICT USAGE IN HOTEL INDUSTRY

This paper discusses the usage of information and communication technologies (ICT in the hospitality sector. A particular attention is paid to the ICT application benefits for hotel enterprises. The paper focuses on the hotel industry in one of the most popular tourist destination in Poland  Karkonosze and Izery Mountains. Our findings show that the majority of interviewed hotels apply ICT. Their managers are deeply aware of the ICT implementation importance for the development of hotel industry. The most often noticed advantage from ICT usage is improving service quality and speed. Even though, the level of ICT usage is not as high as expected. It becomes apparent that ICT implementation encounters numerous barriers, among which the major one is the capital intensity of ICT solutions.

The beneficiary of this project is Burgas Free University.The aims and objectives of the project are briefly presented. The focus is put over the virtual office for the transfer of technologies, the developed methodologies for selection of innovative products/processes/services on the base of their readiness level and deployment degree, as well as evaluation of the economy effect of their deployment. The paper ends with a short presentation of the first two selected technologies from the data base of the office.
