The book discusses the knowledge and popularity of geographical issues among the intellectual elites in the fifteenth-century Poland. This groundbreaking century, the Age of Discovery, also brought forth development of the revolutionary invention of Johannes Gutenberg – the mechanical movable type printing. Focusing on the mutual influences of these both factors, the author analyses the representation of the incunabula editions of the texts indirectly or directly referring to the knowledge on the Earth, preserved in the Polish book collections.

Geoinformation science deals with problems related to acquisition, collection, storage, analysis, interpretation, processing, dissemination, transmission, practical application, and use of geoinformation, i.e. the information obtained by means of interpreting spatial data on spatial objects connected with the Earth’s surface. The aim of the dissertation is to propose an update on vocabulary representing the science of geoinformation in selected information retrieval languages applying an original authorial method for updating dictionaries. This method, embedded in the theoretical framework of the science of geoinformation, has been developed to update vocabulary used in different disciplines and areas of expertise because the dynamic development of science, which has been observed for many years now, contributes to coining many new terms which – after being accepted by the user community who employ them – begin to appear in scientific and professional publications. To improve the quality of descriptions in the aforementioned publications in catalogues and bibliographic databases, it is necessary to introduce an effective method for updating the vocabulary used in information retrieval languages and applied to indexing. An analysis of dictionaries of selected information retrieval languages has been carried out to determine whether the existing representation of the area of knowledge in question (the science of geoinformation) is sufficient in relation to the body of knowledge. The research covered selected languages of three types: languages of subject headings – KABA, the language of subject headings; languages of descriptor headings – the GEMET thesaurus; and languages of keywords – the language of SYNABA system. In the dissertation, the proposal of updating dictionaries of information retrieval language in the field of geoinformation has been implemented in three stages: an analysis of the terminology found in the subject literature from the area of knowledge in question in terms of the following: the names of data categories, names of information categories, names of information system categories, and names of the field of knowledge; an analysis of a document presenting both the scope of knowledge within the studied area of knowledge and periodicals published within the area of knowledge, according to the method for updating dictionaries proposed by the author, which constitutes the authorial original method of collecting vocabulary in order to update dictionaries of information retrieval languages; an analysis of interdisciplinary connections in the area of knowledge. In Poland and in Latin American countries socio-economic development has large environmental costs. The ruling elites, in the name of economic growth, do not care enough to follow the recommendations for such resource management as to reduce all types of pollution and emissions harmful to humans and the environment. The societies themselves are also not fully aware of these changes. This publication is a continuation of the topics discussed in earlier monographs, which were the result of joint research of Polish and Latin American geographers within many projects dedicated to urban issues. It is the second of the two volumes published in 2021 and contains texts presenting new case studies and new ideas about sustainable development, risk and local development in Poland, Colombia and other Latin American countries. Thousands of pages have already been written on sustainable development. However, the subject is still relevant. Processes occurring in the environment, especially the climate change, only emphasize the need for further research and discussion on the subject. In this monograph we return to the issue of understanding and implementing the idea of sustainable development in Poland and Latin America. We also join the discussion on sustainable urban development and governance. Finally, by presenting a few examples, we address the issue of the conflicting nature of sustainable development policies in some countries and regions. The book also introduces the reader to the issue of education on sustainable development. As part of the cooperation of Polish and Latin American geographers academics of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of Warsaw University have been lecturers at doctoral studies in urban and regional sustainable development and post-doctoral studies in Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Manizales in Colombia (Doctorado en Desarrollo Sostenible y Posdoctorado en Ciencias de la Tierra y el Medio Ambiente). Doctoral students and lecturers from the University of Manizales have visited Poland many times in joint symposia and workshops. In 2017 a Polish-Colombian monograph in Spanish was published in Colombia and in 2018 two scientific monographs, both in Spanish and English, were brought out by the University of Warsaw Press. This volume is the second of the two published in 2021 and contains only English texts on sustainable development, risk and local development in Poland, Colombia and some other Latin American countries.

This volume is an attempt to paint a picture of the history of natural resources and mining in Transylvania, through a few selected examples arranged in a chronological order, up to the point in time mentioned in the title. It relies on a scientific approach, but also tries to give an account that is easy to read and understand. Some of the chapters identify the locations of medieval mines that were known from documents but had no precise geographic positions; others call the attention to the fact that, taking into account their characteristics, some modern-day mines were also active during medieval times. The book guides the reader through the adventurous history of learning about the geology of energy resources (natural gas, coal) in Transylvania. In the process of doing that, it also highlights ideas and concepts that were introduced here for the first time in the history of science, such as the industrial use of natural gas, pioneering research on single-celled fossils, and the clarification of stratigraphic controversies through the use of paleontology. The effect of the scientific, economic, societal, and political context on the exploration and exploitation of raw materials – and mineral waters as well – is also discussed.By describing the work of a few outstanding Transylvanian geologists (e.g., Franz Herbich, Gyula Halaváts, and Mór Pálfy), we also highlight that, despite all the difficulties of doing scientific work in a small and often disadvantaged country, thanks to these scientists, this region was able to keep up with, or even lead, the scientific advances in Europe and the rest of the world. In some cases we also discuss their contributions in areas outside of the geosciences.By summarizing and cataloguing those publications of these researchers that are relevant to Transylvania, we also hope to aid further studies in the history of geoscience in this region.

The nature of theoretical and practical materials supporting the teaching of geoinformatics varies widely, from step-by-step descriptive explanations to aids provided by various video sharers. When compiling the present materials we have mainly sought to enable students to deepen their knowledge and improve their understanding by solving specific tasks while gradually grasping the various functions of the program. It provides a starting point for those who have developed an intrest in this world of rapidly evolving, ever- changing and practically adaptable discipline, in order to move to a higher level in applying the programmes. The notes support the practical studies of the students in basic education, supporting the topics of the lectures by providing theoretical material in addition to the practical foundations. Primarily, we have kept in mind that the content of the notes should follow a logical way of thinking. It begins with the simplest basic functions (so that those who have not worked using similar programs yet can get used to it as well), and then, while solving increasingly complex tasks, students will be able to perform simpler analyzes by the end of the course. In the first chapter, students will be introduced to the most basic concepts, the toolbar of the ArcGIS system and the options for configuring the signal system of map objects. In the second chapter, while carrying out various tasks, we learn about the processing of data of the World and Romania and the ways of editing maps. Of course, a geoinformatics practical material like this cannot be finalized. It is an ongoingly expanding and constantly changing discipline depending on the needs and the level of interest.

Jan Wiktor's new book is one of the most up-to-date publications of the present day. Romanists and Slavicists at Polish universities more fully and deeply embrace the whole spiritual life of our friends from the South and this book fulfills an important task of informing the public about the political, social and cultural development of Romania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. // The author intersperses his engaging sketches, cast against the background of the colorful Balkan landscape, with a series of interviews conducted with statesmen and representatives of the literary and artistic world in the countries concerned. Bucharest - the Paris of the East, sun-scorched Dobrudja, Sofia and Varna, dear to the Polish heart, Belgorod and Oplenac with its royal mausoleum - these are some of the stages of a journey full of unforgettable impressions and deep reflections. // The whole story is dominated by the poet's ardent affection and his vivid sentiment for the countryside and the people. In consequence, Jan Wiktor's book is like a golden bridge between the heart of Poland and the hearts of nations so close to us. (Textof the original blurb)

THE ORIGINAL COPY USED FOR DIGITIZATION HAS BEEN PRINTED IN GERMAN FRAKTURA FONT. PLEASE MAKE SURE, THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO READ THIS KIND OF TEXT AND TAPEFACE. // Karl Noetzel wrote in his introduction (in a very „ Zeitgeist-Language“ of the first WorldWar): What we lack for the time being is the knowledge of the Slavic peoples' individualities. The following text should have an enlightening effect here. That is perhaps the only new thing about the Slavs of Austria: the possibility that in each of these nations there were people who were able to speak to us in another language, in our German, about the most sacred thing there was for them, about their nation. This is - it seems to me - a pleasant proof of the high Slavic Culture.

INTRODUCTION: On May 7, 1917, Privy Councilor Penck wrote to me from Berlin: “The occupation of Macedonia by German troops should be used to gain as much information as possible about the country. I succeeded in getting the Kaiser interested in it by applying for the throne, and His Majesty approved 50,000 marks. Scholars are now to be sent down to explore the land. Among them I also named you, who, in my opinion, are not only the best, but also the only person who could shed objective light on the colorful picture of the people.” This was the reason why I took part in the work of the “Macedonian State Commission”. . On behalf of the Prussian Ministry of Culture, I went to the headquarters in Nisch to negotiate the treatment of non-military researchers and at the same time to get the Bulgarian government to send suitable employees. I have achieved both goals.....

This book presents a comprehensive historical and political analysis of the largest and most significant megaprojects in tourism, energy, and mining in the context of the development and modernization process in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. At the same time, it describes the methods of implementation of these infrastructure projects and their socio-environmental impacts. It is characterized by a comprehensive, trans-sectoral and comparative approach that includes political, geostrategic, economic, social, cultural and environmental dimensions. The interdisciplinary nature of the research perspectives is closely related to the diversity of authors who are members of the research group funded by the National Science Center (https://dissonance.wn.uw.edu.pl/). The presence of geographers, political scientists, sociologists, economists, and those with research experience in international relations, anthropology, and environmental protection allowed for the sharing of experiences and practices around cross-cutting and cross-thematic issues.

Where does Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s resilience derive from? Why did he, and the AKP, win the double May 2023 elections again? How did the opposition perform? What were the opposition’s mistakes? How will domestic and foreign policy issues unfold after the elections? These are just a few of the questions the present collection tries to answer. Demonstrating how Turkey’s politics have developed the present volume brings together approaches from politics, sociology, and history, and sheds much-needed light on these crucial questions. They offer scholars and non-specialists alike a comprehensive overview of the implications of the recent elections in almost every aspect of Turkish society. Finally, the chapters that are hosted here provide informed deliberations about Turkey’s future."This collective volume sheds new light on the durability of the Erdoğan regime despite the heavy crises Turkey is going through, and more importantly, shows the limits of an opposition that is unable to propose a democratic transformation of the country, to become a credible alternative to it." - Prof. Hamit Bozarslan, EHESS, ParisThis timely collection features some of the sharpest voices in and on Turkey today, packaged in short, digestible chapters. Coverage includes the role of ideology, incumbent and opposition alliances, the economy, devastating earthquakes, minorities, youth, and relations with external actors like Greece and the European Union. The book will help students and experts alike to make sense of the multi-faceted causes and consequences of a milestone in Turkey's trajectory: 2023 elections and their implications for the country, its region, and the world. - Assoc. Prof. Nora Fisher Onar, University of San Francisco

Today, the benefits of intermediate solutions in societies and economies need to be sufficiently appreciated. When we are demanded to be the best, or every city or region has the ambition to be the biggest, the risk of overstepping the already heavily compromised growth boundaries and frustration finding vent in political tensions increases. The answer may lie in a return to a culture of the 'golden mean' and intermediate solutions (between excellence and mediocrity, wealth and poverty, centralisation and dispersion, power and freedom) as an antidote to the extremes leading to tensions and crises. Based on communities working for the commons and discussing a shared future, local governments can be a laboratory for these changes. The 'golden mean' of the title has a profound ontological, ethical, axiological and pragmatic justification. It applies to the social sciences, of which spatial management is one. The author of the monograph argues that ordinary people in their mass are the key to modern development, including the further development of local self-government. However, this requires building in society and politics a culture of acceptance of diversity as an immanent feature of the human species. To be effective, actions must be accepted by ordinary people. To be taken, they must come from them and not be imposed. They must stem from a sense of agency, even at the level of the most minor, bottom-up collective action to go from them. To foster such a sense, territorial-administrative systems should be decentralised de facto rather than de jure, and the territorial diversity of institutional arrangements, understood as multiple routes to the same goal, should be considered natural.
