The article presents Warsaw booksellers’ and publishers’ activity on Toruń’s book market. They advertised their offer in Toruń’s local periodicals, mainly in “Thornische Wöchentliche Nachrichten und Anzeigen”. Their activity was noticeable especially in the 60s and 70s of the 18th century, a period of increased cultural prosperity in the town. Several notable Warsaw booksellers such as Wawrzyniec Mitzler de Kolof, Jan August Poser and Michał Gröll offered their books in Toruń. What is interesting, their offer covered mostly books in Polish, some of them being translations from French, and also books in French and English, with fewer publications in German and Latin. The books were mainly works of contemporary writers, however new editions of earlier works were also to be found. The book selection was varied and included such subjects as history, medicine, law, philosophy, but also fiction. This interesting offer was a valuable addition to the regular book assortment in Toruń.

Fungi and bacteria as well as insects, mainly larvae of beetles and silverfish, cause frequently significant deterioration of paper-based cultural property. The combating of the biological pests which damage historic paper items with chemical biocides has been applied since the fifties of the twentieth century. However, subsequent years brought disappointment with the excessive use of biocides because more and more attention was attracted to their harmfulness to human health, environment and sometimes also to historic matter. Meanwhile, in many countries in Europe, such as Germany or the Netherlands, and in North America (Canada, USA) practitioners of cultural heritage conservation resign from the disinfection of paper based historic items or it is limited to the objects very strongly affected by microorganisms and then the γ radiation or 70% water solution of ethanol are recommended. In Poland the examinations of vitality of the combated microorganisms before disinfection and sensitivity of the historic item against the biocide are recommended. The disinfestation of the historic paper items is now carried with the fumigation in modified atmosphere containing 99.9% nitrogen. The disinfestation takes appr. 3 weeks and provides the killing of the insects in every developmental stage without the necessity of using toxic chemicals. The dimensions of the special plastic disinfestation chambers can be adjusted depending on the dimensions of the objects and during the treatment the required relative humidity of the atmosphere, i.e. appr. 55%, is maintained inside. Disinfestation treatments using modified atmosphere have been available also in Poland for several years.

The closure of monastic libraries in the Wielkopolska province under Prussian rule had several stages. The first stage consisted in assessments of the size of the libraries and descriptions of their holdings. This was followed by a decision concerning the fate of the collections, which were ultimately transferred to new locations: the Royal and University Libraries in Berlin, schools in Poznań and Bydgoszcz, libraries of seminaries in Gniezno and Poznań, as well as libraries of deaneries. At each stage a key role was played by inventories and catalogues of monastic libraries commissioned by various authorities (of the Duchy of Warsaw, President of the Grand Duchy of Poznań, Royal Regions of Poznań and Bydgoszcz). First they were used to assess the state of the monasteries’ holdings. Next, the authorities made decisions on their basis about what to do with the books. In the first half of the 19th century there were three inventories compiled in monastic libraries in Wielkopolska: in 1810, 1817–1820 and in the 1830s. In the article the author discusses catalogues from these three periods, pointing to the data they contained, ways of describing books and their order, people in charge of inventory taking and their function.

In the second half of the 19th century the Carmelite Monastery in Sąsiadowice had a library encompassing about a thousand volumes, amassed since the founding of the monastery, i.e. 1603. In 1915 a small but very valuable part of the collection (about 70 books) found its way into the library of the Ossoliński National Institute. This happened thanks to Professor Eugeniusz Szmurło, who as a delegate of the Academy of Sciences in Petersburg was charged with securing books collections from aristocratic and monastic libraries in early 1915 in Eastern Galicia, after the front had moved on. The aim of the article is to present the fate of the items from the library of the Sąsiadowice monastery which found their way into the Ossoliński National Institute in Lviv, as well as those which are currently kept in the library of the Ossoliński National Institute in Wrocław. The attached annex contains a catalogue with descriptions of 71 books (2 incunabula, 67 printed books from the 16th century and 2 printed books from the 17th century).

The history of the Bar monastery, both Orthodox and Catholic, is still waiting for an in-depth study. As dispersed archive documents are found, there emerges a fuller picture of an important institution in the history of the education system in Podolia. Visitation reports show several forms of the monastery’s activity: education, charity, pastoral ministry and economic activity. They provide information about the number, education and competences of the monastics as well as the school curriculum, number and origin of the pupils, lay teachers. The documents also make it possible to establish the contents of and analyse the monastery’s book collection as well as textbooks and teaching aids. In addition, they reveal the funds at the disposal of one of the wealthiest monasteries in the region. The visitors also compiled a full list of the monastery’s subjects and their obligations as well as the Basilians’ economic activities. The documents in question make it possible to present the situation of the Bar congregation a dozen or so years before its dissolution.

In autumn 1828 the dean of Ostrzeszów, Fr. Jak Kompałła, wrote a memorial to Archbishop Teofil Wolicki, newly appointed metropolitan of Archdioceses of Gniezno and Poznań joined by a personal union (Archdiocesan Archives in Poznań, no. KA 10 969, Records of the General Consistory of the Archbishopric of Poznań concerning the former Bernardine Church in Ostrzeszów 1823–1853). Fr. Kompałła suggested that furnishings from the dissolved and still existing monasteries be given to poor parish churches. Archbishop Wolicki intervened with the authorities in Berlin, which led to a proclamation of the Royal District (Regierungsbezirk) II in Poznań no. 348 of 19 December 1828 demanding that the “administrators of churches investigate the needs of poor Catholic parishes with regard to organs, bells, chasubles and other church furnishings”. On 14 January 1829 the General Consistory of the Archbishopric of Poznań sent a letter to all deans of the 23 deaneries with the above request. By April 1829 replies came from 262 (80.36%) out of the total number of 326 parishes in the Archdiocese of Poznań. No fewer than parishes (225, 69.01%) asked for furnishings, with only 37 parishes (11.35%) not wanting any and 64 (19.63%) parishes not replying to the question. It could, therefore, be said that 101, i.e. 30.98%, parishes did not want any furnishings. The above documents are to be found in the Archdiocesan Archives in Poznań in the bound volume no. KA 12 236. An edition of this source is under preparation. It will also feature data from a personal questionnaire sent in June 1829 on the initiative of Archbishop Wolicki to parishes and monasteries from both Archdioceses: of Poznań and Gniezno.

The reference collection of the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno includes 72 directories and yearbooks of various religious orders. The oldest of these printed books comes from 1767 and was made for Camaldolese monks. The most recent one is a yearbook of the Oratorian Fathers from 2008. However, these printed books are far from uniform. Of crucial importance to this state of affairs is the period in which they originated. Another factor is the specificity of the various religious orders and congregations as well as the purpose of the publications: liturgical or organisational-administrative. That is why the collection in question encompasses directories (liturgical calendars), directories combined with yearbooks and yearbooks on their own. This is a result of the evolution of these publications, similar to the one that transformed analogous publications prepared for dioceses. As they contain a lot of information on a variety of topics, they constitute a valuable historical source, testifying to the liturgical and pastoral life of religious orders and congregations. Often, owing to a lack of any other archive material, they are the only source of information about the staffing of the various monasteries, abbeys or houses. The collection kept in the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno contains directories and yearbooks drawn up by the following religious orders or congregations – Bernardine Sisters and Fathers (7 items), Camaldolese Monks (1), Cistercian Monks and Nuns (10), Conventual Franciscans (35), Discalced Carmelite Monks and Nuns (1), Dominican Brothers and Sisters (1), Jesuits (11), Missionaries of the Holy Family (1), Oratorian Fathers (1), Reformati (3) and Sacred Heart Fathers (1). Generally, most of the books came from the Archives and Library of the Metropolitan Chapter in Gniezno. Other donors were: the Metropolitan Curia, the Primatial Seminary and the Secretariat of the Primate of Poland. The collection also includes printed items of unknown provenance. However, all of them constitute a valuable source for the study of the history of religious orders and congregations operating not only in Poland, a source that will leave no one indifferent.

The aim of the article is to discuss and present an edition of sources documenting the takeover of archive, library and art collections from the Norbertine Sisters’ Monastery in Czarnowąsy, dissolved on 24 November 1810. The material comes from the first and fifth volume of the so-called Büsching Papers and mostly consists of letters from 1810 and 1812. In addition, the edition includes correspondence of the local dissolution office concerning similar actions in other towns in Silesia (Brzeg, Gliwice, Głubczyce, Namysłów, Opole, Racibórz, Rudy). The most interesting information in this correspondence comes from letters dealing with the collections of the Norbertine Monastery in Czarnowąsy. Its library, in addition to all the writings of the Church Fathers and a large number of historical works, encompassed manuscripts dealing with the history of the local Norbertine Sisters well as the history of Upper Silesia and its nobility. Among the works of art amassed in the monastery, the one considered to be the most valuable was an unknown painting on wood. Büsching ordered “some silver” to be taken from Czarnowąsy to Wrocław. Works with themes similar to those found in Czarnowąsy were identified in the libraries of Cistercian monasteries in Rudy and Jemielnica, the Reformati convent in Namysłów and an unnamed monastery in Brzeg (of the Capuchins?). Apart from books, two very large and beautiful globes were found in Rudy.
