A Computer Collation of Medieval Slavic Menologies

Author(s): Cynthia M. Vakareliyska,Kevork Horissian,Heather Pankl / Language(s): English Issue: 2/1998

The computer collation project was originally conceived with the narrow purpose of providing a mechanism for identifying the textual tradition of the Curzon and Banica menologies by comparing them against a wide variety of contemporaneous and older Slavic menologies. It became clear, however, that the same corpus and search program that would permit the comparative analysis of these two individual menology texts could also be employed more broadly to collate the corpus by specific textual patterns, in this way establishing a typology of medieval Slavic menology traditions which could be used, together with the text corpus itself, by other scholars both as a framework for analysis of any given menology manuscript, and as a means of tracing manuscript relationships.

A Conceptual Approach for Industrial Internet of Things Assessment

A Conceptual Approach for Industrial Internet of Things Assessment

Author(s): Luben Boyanov / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a new paradigm that fundamentally changes the current patterns and activities in industry. The new Digital revolution transforms all sectors of human activities and production. IIoT has numerous architectural, business, technological, social and consumer perspectives. This paper looks at some reference architectures, connectivity issues, business aspects and security topics of IIoT. Those domains are looked at with their most important subdomains into a framework that can allow an architect or end user to make a quantitative assessment of a IIoT. The proposed approach uses expert evaluation of the main domains and subdomains from a reference IIoT architecture, which are then used to obtain an overall IIoT assessment.

A Deeply Rooted Tradition – Ensuring Access to Knowledge and Culture in Finnish Libraries

A Deeply Rooted Tradition – Ensuring Access to Knowledge and Culture in Finnish Libraries

Author(s): Barbro Wigell-Ryynänen / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2007

In Finland, part of Sweden for more than 600 years and at that time Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire, ideas of popular education emerged with the national awakening in the mid nineteenth century. Elementary education for all and the Anglo-American concept of "public libraries free of charge" began to gain ground in social thinking. The founders of the first elementary schools and the first parish libraries were students, teachers, clergymen and philanthropic persons of standing, wanting to bridge the educational and cultural divide of their time.

Author(s): Doina Banciu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2010

The article presents part of the results of a scientific research meant to create a Demonstrative system for scientific and technological information and documentation, submitted as a project belonging to the sector plan (2009). A distinctive perspective on the bibliographic research in the digital era (I)

A distinctive perspective on the bibliographic research in the digital era (I)

Author(s): Silvia-Adriana Tomescu / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2016

In this essay we intend to underline the importance of bibliographies, in the scientific research process. We aim to emphasize the capability of these works to gather, synthesize in a distinctive manner, types of sources, resources, documents, so that spheres of scientific knowledge benefit of a clear and objective image at a definite moment. Our intention in this approach is to discuss the necessity to create standardized synthesis of the scientific domains through bibliographies, in order to support basic literacy needs of the readers and to offer a global view of the topic explored. A less treated aspect in the scientific literature that we aim to highlight in the present paper is the role and pragmatics of bibliographies, the transdisciplinary dimension of such tools that now, in the globalised era has the power to send the researcher in the virtual space of interconnected documents, of digital archives and libraries offering a comprehensive picture of the subjects investigated.

A Family Resemblance: Migration, Work and Loyalty

Author(s): Frédéric Décosse / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Ayoub and Malika Amrani are husband and wife, former farm workerswho, for many years, came to France on OMI contracts to do seasonal work for a farmer in the Bouches-du-Rhône area. In the early 1970s, the young woman’s father and uncle, fellahs2from the Moroccan Prerif who had emigrated to the city, found a contract in the city of Grans, on the Crau plain, and gradually “sponsored” the next generation of migrants. In 1990, when Malika was recruited to join them, there were about ten family members already working on the farm. Though she was formally employed as a farm worker, she actually worked as a “servant” for the farmer and his family. Against the advice of her employer, who wanted nothing to distract her from her work, she got married and held a big wedding in Fez, to which her employer was invited. Ayoub, her husband, was recruited to work in the orchards. As a newlywed, Malika had more and more trouble accepting the abuse and bullying her parents had endured until then. She became increasingly opposed to her employer. 2000 marked a breaking point, when Ayoub fell from an apple tree and was seriously injured. His pelvis was fractured. Their employer was reluctant to report it as a work-related accident. The couple stood up to him, and the following year, none of the family’s contracts were renewed. It was a form of retaliation. It was a collective punishment, as if to remind the migrants that they were bound to their employer by the same duty of loyalty. This incident would have lasting consequences on Malika’s relationship with her family, who accused her of being selfish. In the meantime, Malika became a prominent figure in the movement to defend seasonal migrants’ rights, almost in spite of herself. Her story was the subject of several articles in the media and was taken up by the Collectif de défense des travailleurs agricoles saisonniers (Collective for the Defense of Seasonal Agricultural Workers) (CODETRAS).
