Par-delà Nietzsche

This article presents Nietzsche's notion of the Übermensch (le surhomme in French) as a development of romanticism conceived of as a quest to reveal the sentiment that defines or characterizes each individual as an individual. This approach reveals the affinities between Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, notably with respect to Schopenhauer's notion of Will that Nietzsche transforms into that of the Will to power, thereby underscoring what can be considered as Nietzsche's individualism. We argue that as a romantic notion, the notion of Übermensch fashions an ideal of what life could be but overlooks the importance of otherness and the role that otherness plays in defining the individual. Going beyond Nietzsche implies that the Übermensch, as a logical construct neglects the desire to please that constitutes an important part of an individual's relation with otherness.

Sortir du nihilisme: Nietzsche, Mill et l’individualité comme clé de transformation morale et civilisationnelle

Nietzsche’s criticism of the masses could have looked hackneyed at the end of the XIXth century, had it not the originality of moving onto psychological and biological levels what others previously elaborated only at a social scale: a "herd instinct" explaining both the lack of social cohesion and the loss of possible individual affirmation in democratic and egalitarian ages. As he sees the utilitarian promotion of happiness and empathy as part of the problem, he fiercely condemns John Stewart Mill’s philosophy – as he understands it. Our point is to throw into relief that Mill’s theory of individuality is but closer to Nietzsche’s views for regenerating life against the spreading of democratic "nihilism". Our cross-reading of Mill and Nietzsche therefore aims at offering a reassessment of their antagonism and at highlighting ways of overcoming "nihilism" via culture and cultivation of the "character" and the individual surpassing of oneself.

Progress and Criticism of Progress as a Characteristic of Modern Civilizations in the Work of Friedrich Nietzsche and Ludwig Wittgenstein

Superficially, the proximity of Wittgenstein's work and its undisputed influence by Friedrich Nietzsche's ideas and concepts suggests that there are also overlaps in the large and in Nietzsche's work decisive field of progress and criticism of progress. The article tries to show that this is not the case. Despite all the overlaps that may exist between Friedrich Nietzsche and Ludwig Wittgenstein, these do not come to light in the concept of progress and the critique of progress. Both thinkers pursue a very different movement of thought; Wittgenstein sees Nietzsche's focus on the "idea of great progress" as a "delusion", which he does not consider to be expedient. Ludwig Wittgenstein explicitly distances himself here from the spirit that defined the prevailing European and American civilization in the 1930s. He does not succumb to the delusions of grandeur of new, higher-level civilization, but leaves progress as the constantly progressing background noise of any civilization.

Blood on the Leaves / Blood on the Roots: Nietzsche, Schürmann, and Wynter on Ressentiment, Bad Conscience, Double Consciousness, and Metaphysics at the Birth of the Human Being as Praxis at the End of Metaphysics

This paper sets out to investigate the Nietzschean connection between Sylvia Wynter and Reiner Schürmann through a reading of Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morals. Nietzsche’s account of ‘bad conscience’ is read through the Wynterian and Fanonian concept of ‘sociogeny’ to demonstrate its necessity to Nietzsche’s project of the Great Redeemer. This paper, then, demonstrates a previously undiagnosed influence of Nietzsche on Wynter and the role that anarchy plays in her construction of the ‘human being as praxis’. The essay concludes with an amelioration of Schürmann’s epochal genealogy to account for a racialized lacunae present in his Western genealogy of thought. It is by bringing all three together that we understand anarchy as being firmly committed to anti-racist and antianti-Black enactments. It concludes by highlighting the possibility of metaphysics after the withering of epochal archē in what this paper calls ‘the multitude of metaphysics’.

The termination of a pregnancy is not without its consequences for the health and life of the woman, as well as for other persons: those connected with and involved in the decision. Medical and psychological research shows the devastation that abortion inflicts on various areas of life and the disorders it causes. There is no doubt that efforts to help those affected by abortion are a priority task for all those who can diagnose the problem (on a psychological, physical or spiritual level) and then effectively support its resolution, which psychotherapists, doctors and clergy do. This article focuses on the experience of trauma and suffering of a woman with post-abortion syndrome, the psychological consequences after the termination of pregnancy (PAD: Post Abortion Distress and PAS: Post Abortion Syndrome) and the ways to help on therapeutic grounds, especially spiritual (‘Rachel’s Vineyard’), with reference to the precious document ‘Evangelium vitae’ by Pope John Paul II.

The Use of S. Khoruzhyi's Ideas of Energetic Hesychasm in the Educational Strategies of Postmodern Society

Through the prism of the study of the theology of Hesychasm, the authors of this article consider the philosophical work of S. Khoruzhyi as a present-day system of non-classical pedagogical paradigm. On the other hand, this paradigm is a philosophically framed historical tradition of Orthodox ontological experience of human existence, which in our time has gone beyond the end of history. Moving beyond confessional boundaries into a universal philosophical meta-anthropological project provides a heuristic effect for the construction of spiritual pedagogy as well as for its synergy with the educational strategies and spiritual practices of the common man of the postmodern era. The authors sought to identify the basic intentions of religion and postmodern consciousness and to characterize S. Khoruzhyi's theosophical paradigm in terms of its unconscious and unintentional correlation with the social philosophy of pedagogical of postmodernism. For this purpose, we used comparative typological and meaningful methinks, as well as elements of hermeneutics and intertextual analysis. As a result of the study, the authors formulated a number of conclusions and results. The most general one defines the peculiarity of S. Khoruzhogo's narrative, in which the philosopher not only insists but also systematically embeds Hesychasm in the context of the post-non-classical philosophical and pedagogical paradigm. In essence, S. Khoruzhyi forms an alternative to the classical philosophical paradigm, which (even despite the author's formal objections) is open to a horizontal postmodern dialogue and constructed in a personal Hesychasm practice " bottom-up" from -because of "human energy".

Sloboda štampe spada među najznačajnija moralna prava slobodnih ljudi. Posebno novinari koriste prednosti tog prava od koga u idealnom slučaju svaka osoba ima koristi. Već smo primetili da sloboda štampe nije neko apsolutno ili bezuslovno pravo. To pravo se uživa unutar granica ustanovljenih na osnovu drugih legitimnih društvenih interesa, posebno kad su u pitanju bezbednost i zaštita prava svih članova društva. Postoje situacije u stvarnom životu kada je u javnom interesu da temeljni princip novinarske etike, princip maksimalizovanja relevantnog govorenja istine, bude ograničen. Kad se izveštaji cenzurišu ili dobrovoljno ne objavljuju radi višeg dobra, uvek moraju da postoje dobri razlozi za takav postupak, i uvek bi trebalo da postoji i izričita odredba za kasniji povraćaj punih novinarskih sloboda što je brže moguće.

Da bi čovek mogao da odgovori na pitanje šta može da zna, on mora prethodno da odgovori na pitanje kako dolazi do znanja. Ako čovek, naime, ne zna kako dolazi do znanja, njemu ne ostaje ništa drugo nego da za sve postavke svoje dogmatički, tj. nekritički tvrdi da su one identične sa znanjem, pa prema tome, i sa istinom. Pošto se, međutim, nekritički postavljene tvrdnje ne samo neće poklapati jedna s drugom, nego će, naprotiv, jedna drugoj protivrečiti, čovek će, samim time, biti naveden da tvrdi da nijedna od tih postavki nije identična sa znanjem i da, prema tome, istina uopšte ne postoji. On će, drugim rečima, dogmatizam da zameni sa skepticizmom i time ponovo da protivreči sebi, pošto se tvrdnjom da istina ne postoji, očevidno, uništava i sama ta tvrdnja.

Friedrich Nietzsche, "Der Meister des Verdachts". Über die Nietzsche-Lektüren von Michel Foucault und Paul Ricœur

The term "masters of suspicion", which summarizes the critical views of Marx, Nie-tzsche, and Freud, has found its way into contemporary philosophy through Paul Ricœur and is considered his kind of "patent". It is less well known that Michel Foucault also wrote a text on the subject of "Nietzsche, Freud, Marx" in which he speaks of suspicion. The author therefore asks herself where this thematic agreement comes from and undertakes a comparison of Foucault's and Ricœur's readings of Nietzsche. In doing so, she puts forward two theses that she attempts to prove. The first thesis is that Ricœur actually begins where Foucault left off and leads us in a direction that is opposite to that of Foucault. The second thesis is that Foucault stays closer to Nietzsche by trying to advance his "suspicion" instead of overcoming it, as Ricœur does.

Conceptualizing visual metaphors in high tech products advertising: Results and conclusions from an empirical research

The use of visual metaphors is a popular method of advertising nowadays. This paper briefly reviews the theoretical framework of metaphorical expression in advertising, and particularly the use of visual metaphors. It then continues with presenting results and findings from an empirical study on the use of visual metaphors in the ads of high-tech products. Given the nature of metaphors, the analysis is based on both qualitative and quantitative readings of the data, in order to reach more insightful conclusions. Based on the research findings and following the theoretical introduction, the paper concludes with implications and guidelines for the marketing utility of exploring the meaning and other features of visual metaphors.

Semiotic mediation for the sustainable digital empowerment of older adults

As digital technologies proliferate, older adults are still facing significant challenges in achieving sustainable digital empowerment. This qualitative study examines the metaphorical registers spontaneously mobilized by seniors when discussing digital tools. It also highlights subjective semiotic framings which hinder their digital acculturation. Through ethnographic observations of digital literacy training, we identify diverse metaphorical projections conveying apprehensions (technologies as “nests of problems”, “magical” realms) but also motivating drivers towards meaningful digital appropriation. The findings underscore the importance of symbolic mediation strategies, in order to deconstruct inhibiting traditional theories and foster technology uses rooted in the life contexts of seniors. By elucidating the complex interplay of cognitive, emotional and cultural tensions shaping digital relationships, our research project argues for designing digital training less as technical instruction than as holistic empowerment journeys integrating identity-related dimensions. Ultimately, research on these semiotic foundations contributes to broader societal efforts that ensure equal voices for diverse knowledge approaches in an increasingly AI-dominated world. Only through such inclusive mediation efforts can we truly accompany digital “immigrants” toward affirmative technological citizenship.

The mythical and technomagic aquatic metaphors of digital aesthetics as a semiotic empowerment of the female, oneiric, and translucent imaginary in the techno-art

Conceptualizing digital reality through metaphors in public service announcements: A semiotic perspective

This article discusses the conceptualization of digital reality through metaphors in public service announcements (PSAs), employing a semiotic perspective. PSA is viewed as a complex sign in the space of culture generated by social institutions to be shared with the general public and to raise awareness about important issues of society. The discussion is based on three basic claims: firstly, as digital reality increasingly spreads throughout modern life, digital technology shapes how we understand and experience the world and profoundly alters meanings and cognitive structures; secondly, the creation and reconfiguration of meanings and cognitive structures caused by digital artifacts occurs through metaphorization processes resulting in the creation of digital metaphors; thirdly, digital metaphors are the driving force behind creation and a way of producing original PSAs and display commitment to innovation reflected in the selection of signs. The article proposes a theoretical framework that integrates the concepts of “digital metaphor” and “representation” in Peircean view, thus creating a semiotic perspective of interpreting the “discoverability” i.e. public perception and comprehension of PSAs. Special attention is paid to the multimodal nature of the complex cultural signs under study and the representative characters of different representamens. The analysis of some PSAs containing digital metaphors is provided to substantiate the potential of the suggested theoretical framework. The article draws inspiration from works by Charles S. Peirce (1903), Umberto Eco (2014), Ibrus Indrek and Peeter Torop (2015), Kristian Bankov (2022), Eric Chown and Fernando Nascimento (2023), and others.

Еnhancing city identity through digital metaphors

City branding is a discipline focused on unveiling the unique character of cities and enhancing their visibility, identity, and cultural impact. In recent years, cities have been exploring new methods to promote themselves and attract more visitors. This has led stakeholders and those involved in city branding to find new pathways to create “a new identifiable image” of the city (Riza et al. 2012), making it an attractive destination (Kotler & Gertner 2002). With the rise of digital technologies and globalization, the possibilities for city branding have significantly increased. In the digital era, many cities that pivoted from traditional models of branding have succeeded in renewing their identity using digital media and the incorporation of digital metaphors in their branding campaigns. As a result, many cities have managed to rebrand and refashion their identity. This paper aims to explore how cities are represented in digital media and which digital metaphors are used to attract a younger, more technologically savvy audience. Through a multimodal framework, I will analyze the recent branding campaign of the city of Thessaloniki to identify how digital metaphors are used and their impact on younger audiences.

Digital realities and metaphorical constructs: A multimodal semiotic and intermedial analysis of Blade Runner 2049

The concept of metaphor has long been explored in film in a variety of ways, from Eisenstein’s experimentations to more contemporary examples. Contemporary theoreticians such as Forceville (2016) have enhanced the concept of metaphor, moving away from its purely linguistic quality and underlying its multimodal aspect. In this article, we will use Force-ville’s paradigm of multimodal metaphors as implemented in films. We will analyse Blade Runner 2049 (Villeneuve 2017), focusing on its representation of digital reality through multimodal metaphors. The film, widely acclaimed for its philosophical depth (Shanahan et al. eds. 2020) and visual storytelling, is set in a dystopian future where human-like androids coexist with humans and serve as a means for exploring digital metaphors in a society dominated by artificial intelligence and augmented reality. We examine the film’s use of visual, auditory, and narrative elements, in order to construct a metaphorical framework that reflects contemporary digital concerns. Through an in-depth exploration of its visual, auditory, and narrative dimensions, this analysis uncovers a dense metaphorical structure within the film. This structure mirrors pressing societal concerns regarding the evolution and impact of digitalisation, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, providing a critical lens on contemporary technological advancements. The study aims to enrich the discourse on digital metaphors in media, highlighting the evolving interplay between human experiences and technological advancements.

Sanai Gaznevi: život, djelo i misao

Hakim Sana’i Ghaznavi was a prominent Iranian poet and gnostic who lived at the turn of the fifth and sixth centuries after the Hijra. This paper aims to present this poet and the role he played in the development of Persian gnostic literature. The paper was written using a descriptive-research method, relying on library materials. For this purpose, the poet’s works were selected and analyzed, as well as the sources written about his life and poetry. Research shows that Sana’i spent his childhood and youth in Ghazna, and it was in this city that he studied the sciences and knowledge of the time. In his youth, Sana’i traveled to Balkh, where he met Muhammed ibn Mansur Sarakhsi, a Sufi and scholar of that time, and spent some time in his hanikah. Sana’i died in Ghazna, which is located in today’s Afghanistan, in the first half of the sixth century AD. He left behind valuable works, including ethical, philosophical and social masnavis, and Divan (which consists of ghazals, rubais and qasidas), which had a huge impact on culture and literature even after his death. Sana’i revolutionized the process of Persian poetry. Each literary form of Sana’i’s works in some way constitutes a new literary genre in Persian literature. Actually, his qasidas are the beginning of a new process, masnavis are the introduction of his innovative thinking, and, finally, his ghazals set him apart from the ghazal poets of earlier periods in terms of expressing a new and innovative mood. Therefore, Sana’i is considered an epochal poet, because there are few poets who have introduced innovations in several fields, and the influence of his words will be seen centuries later in the works of poets after him.
