The article offers an overview of problems in contemporary Bulgarian codicology, having a bearing on the methodological approach to the description of medieval Slavonic manuscript documents. The author makes a general survey of the history and state of this discipline (or science) in Bulgaria, pointing out some of the more important trends in its development and citing selected examples, which illustrate as yet unsolved questions regarding the structure of the description and the formal presentation (formalization) of its elements. Also, the need is commented of bringing about changes in the traditional attitudes and (or) arriving at a new consensus between the specialists, paleographers and codicologists, on a wide international scale, these being essential preconditions for the creation of the modern electronic catalogues and publications of the old literary heritage, intended for universal use.

The great work of the Solun Brothers – Saints Cyril and Methodius – undoubtedly played an important part in the creation of the national identity and national awareness for many Slavic nations. Considering importance of the Cyril and Methodius heritage, it seems surprising how little their images were used on national coinage – one of the most common and most important symbols of independent nations. The only countries that paid a tribute to Solun Brother’s legacy, while creating their national identity were Slovakia, Bulgaria and Macedonia; by placed them in certain cultural, political and ideological context on collector’s items as well as on everyday currency.

BOOK@HAND Bells: Mobile Presentation of the Valuable Bells of the Historic and Culture Heritage of Bulgaria

The paper introduces the mobile presentation of Bulgarian bells as the newest developments in the GUIDE@HAND mobile application family. The integration of the Web based archive on the Bulgarian bells (Multimedia Fund “BellKnow”) and the mobile application family made it possible that information on bells can be presented on mobile devices. A standalone offline mobile application (BOOK@HAND Bells) was created providing multimedia information on bells including textual description (history, creator, material, height, location, description, etc.), audio files containing the sounds of the bells, photos, videos presenting the bells while being tolled and diagrams representing the acoustic characteristics of the bells.

Learning Scenario for Better Understanding of Fairy Tales Using Role-playing and Serious Games Methods

Na styku epok. Porównanie warsztatu twórczego Josepha Riepla i Marcina Józefa Żebrowskiego na przykładzie utworów pro processione

In this paper, the author compares aesthetic and stylistic attitude of two composers who worked in Jasna Góra Monastery at the turn of Baroque and Classical eras. The aim of this article is to capture the differences and similarities between the creative output of both artists by comparison of their pro processione pieces, which are a local variant of a church symphony. Collating complexive analysis, the author points characteristic solutions implemented by the composers, which gives rise to denotation their output as baroque or classical. In this way both composers were located on a stylistic timeline – Riepel as a baroque composer who already has implemented some classical elements into his style, and Żebrowski as a representant of galant style with baroque remainders. Outline of the compositional technique was depicted, what in the future can be a starting point for the further researches.

Stan zachowania rękopisów symfonii Carla Dittersa von Dittersdorfa w Polsce – rekonesans

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739–1799) has been remembered in history of music in the 18th century as a significant contributor in developing singspiel (comic opera) genre and as a composer famous among double bass players because of two double bass concertos. But recent studies brought to the fore information about a variety of his instrumental music. Between the others, there are more than 120 symphonies. This paper is a report-attempt about present condition of extant Dittersdorf symphonies’ manuscripts, preserved in the contemporary Polish area. There are nine archives and libraries mentioned, where these manuscripts are stored. The richest collection of Dittersdorf’s symphonies is located in Pauline Monastery Archive in Jasna Góra in Częstochowa (PL-CZ), where seventeen manuscripts are stored. All of them preserved in good condition, arisen in last quarter of the 18th century. Other manuscripts we can find in: Archive of Polish Dominicans Province in Kraków (PL-Kd), Cistercian Abbey in Kraków-Mogiła (PL-MO), Benedictine Abbey in Krzeszów/Grüssau (PL-KRZ), Library of Theological Faculty of Opole University (PL-OPsm), Archdiocesan Archive in Poznań (PL-Pa Muz MM), Diocesan Library in Sandomierz (PL-SA) and Special Collections Department of Wrocław University Library (PL-WRu). There is also a piece of information about the manuscript from Pilica (PL-PIk), presumably lost in recent time, which was one of very few examples Dittersdorf’s manuscripts written in the 19th century.

The article describes the group of seventeen early English prints from the second half of the 17th century. The prints are part of the collection of the former Preußische Staatsbibliothek in Berlin kept in The Jagiellonian University and contain ayres and religious songs. Fourteen of them were published by John and Henry Playford. The first part of the paper shows the biographies of the publishers and brings the state of research on their work. The second part includes the detailed description of the seventeen of early English prints. The final part presents the content of the prints and biographies of its most important composers.

Archiwum Ogniska Polskiego w Turynie — akta nieocenionej działalność propolskiej we Włoszech

Activities related to the promotion of Polish language and culture led by the famous Poland’s admirer — Begey family, is not the only Polish accent in Turin. In the capital of Piedmont operates the most dynamic Polish Association — The Polish Hearth in Turin which origins date back to the war times. Describing the formation of the Polish Hearth in Turin, professor Krystyna Jaworska, at the beginning, points to the informal nature of that organization. However, over the years, the community in Turin became active in many areas which is confirmed by the documents kept in the archives of the association. At the same time, these documents are showing a forgotten but very important legacy of Polish war emigration in Italy.

„Дигитален архив Марин Дринов“ – резултати и перспективи

One of the first projects of the Science Archive at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is the “Digital Archive Marin Drinov” (http://www.math.bas.bg/digi/drinov/archiv.html). It was realized in cooperation with the department of Applied Information Technologies in the Humanities at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The project began back in 2006 with the scanning of 24 archival units (176 facsimiles of manuscripts, 14 printings and 15 black and white photos) from fond № 104K of the Science Archive. It is worth mentioning that the digitalization of a personal archival fond is the first of its kind in Bulgaria with respect to the technological, methodological, and classification merits of the digitalized information. The future plans of the team that undertook this project are closely related to the systematic updating of published information, in terms of quantity and thematic content, with documents reflecting the life and work of M. Drinov which are kept in the fonds of the Science Archive. This project is still viable in 2014, a year marking the 145th anniversary of the Bulgarian Literary Society (now the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.)

Expanding the Knowledge Base and Development of New Skills of Museum Specialists in Line with the Digital Era

The first part of the paper presents the main results of a survey related to the topic among the staff of Regional historical museum Burgas. The second half discuss-es the paradigm of Massive open online courses (MOOC) as one innovative and flexible solution for continuing vocational education and training. Presented are the results of a large scale research conducted in the framework of BizMOOC project regarding the usage of MOOCs for corporate training in European organizations including cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, archives etc.

Revolutionizing Historical Manuscript Analysis: A Deep Learning Approach with Intelligent Feature Extraction for Script Classification

The automated classification of historical document scripts holds profound implications for historians, providing unprecedented insights into the contexts of ancient manuscripts. This study introduces a robust deep learning system integrating an intelligent feature selection method, elevating the script classification process. Our methodology, applied to the CLaMM dataset, involves preprocessing steps such as advanced denoising through non-local means and binarization using Canny edge detection. These steps, pivotal for image cleaning and segmentation, set the stage for subsequent in-depth analysis. To enhance feature detection, we employ the Harris corner detector, followed by a k-means clustering process to eliminate redundancy and outliers. This process facilitates the extraction of consistently sized patches, capturing distinctive features of various scripts in historical manuscripts. The dataset undergoes rigorous training using precise convolutional neural network (CNN) models, empowering our system to discern intricate patterns and features for informed decision-making during the classification process. Ultimately, for the definitive script classification of an entire document, we employ a majority voting mechanism on the patches. The results highlight the effectiveness of this comprehensive approach, with the system achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 89.2%. This underscores the system proficiency in accurately classifying historical document scripts, offering a reliable and efficient solution for historians and researchers. The robustness of our methodology positions it as a compelling tool for meticulous analysis of historical manuscripts, contributing significantly to the field of historical document research and preservation.

Prawna ochrona dziedzictwa naturalnego w Polsce – wyzwania i perspektywy

The article analyzes the legal status and protection of natural heritage sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Poland. The natural properties on the List include natural elements and cultural landscapes as objects accompanying the monuments. Legal protection of natural and landscape resources is regulated mainly in the provisions on nature protection, the protection of monuments and spatial planning and development acts. However, there is no clear distinction between the protection of natural assets under the UNESCO Convention and provisions concerning the protection of the world cultural and natural heritage in the Polish legal system, which causes many legal problems related to their protection, management and monitoring. A consequence of this situation may be the degradation of these elements, in particular unique natural habitats, where protection under criminal law is unsatisfactory. There are only two natural heritage sites in Poland – the Białowieża Primeval Forest and ancient beech forests in the Bieszczady National Park. Therefore, efforts should be made to extend this List. However, it is necessary to consider strengthening the legal protection of such objects in the Nature Conservation Act by distinguishing this form of heritage or establishing separate legal acts dedicated to these objects. Therefore, only legal protection at the national level will be most effective.

Spacerując ulicami miast zdobionych zabytkowymi budynkami, czytając dzieła przodków, w których zawarte są dzieje świata i ludzkości, przestrzegając dawnych obyczajów, które na trwałe zagnieździły się w naszej kulturze, lub korzystając z technologicznych skarbów, które przez wieki ułatwiały ludziom życie, możemy dostrzec, że codziennie mamy do czynienia z dziedzictwem kulturowym. Co za tym idzie – wpływa ono na nas wszystkich, ubarwiając naszą przestrzeń, pomagając nam zrozumieć myślenie poprzednich pokoleń, a także polepszając jakość życia. Scheda pozostawiona nam przez naszych przodków nie jest niczyją własnością ze względu na jej ponadczasowy charakter. Pokazuje to, że poprzez swój wpływ na funkcjonowanie współczesnych ludzi, pomimo upływających lat dziedzictwo kulturowe jest naszym wspólnym dobrem – i w pełni się z tym zgadzam.

CultIS: Web-based Platform for Intelligent Cultural Content Management

The paper presents the research, development, and some of the major implementations to date of the web-based platform for intelligent cultural con-tent management CultIS. It is an innovative environment providing descriptive cataloging, subject indexing, intelligent data retrieval, curation and collection development aimed at meeting the functional needs associated with the growing expectations of users of cultural institutions such as libraries, museums and other providers of cultural and historical heritage. Based on the implementations of CultIS for different purposes and contexts, not only its effectiveness, stability and reliability are tested, but the results also serve for its constant development and improvement.

Where Have All the Ur III Seals Gone?

In this paper I analyse the late 3rd millennium and early 2nd millennium seals in two mid-size collections and reach the conclusion that exceedingly few of them date to the Ur III period (c. 2100 – 2000 BC). I include some observations on other collections. I then ask the basic question: where have all the Ur III seals gone? After briefly exploring other options, I suggest with online visual evidence, that the vast majority of the Ur III seals were re-cut in the Old Babylonian period. At the end of the paper, I suggest that the absence or presence of seals from specific periods can be used to model larger historical trends.
