This article continues a theme recently raised in this journal by Małek (2019) and Krzyworzeka-Jelinowska (2019). It analyses the activism of Polish women living abroad, as headteachers, teachers and parents at Saturday schools, and demonstrates that Polish migrants are not as socially passive as sometimes assumed. We define civil society as ‘a society of active citizens, associating together and working for the collective good’. Our study of seven schools suggests that the Covid-19 lockdown stimulated some schools to broaden their activities as civil society organisations. Although some local links were weakened, for example because Polish Clubs were shut, the schools’ online activities expanded: more networking took place between headteachers UK-wide, and the schools reached out to a range of Polish and non-Polish organisations: locally; elsewhere in the UK; in Poland; and in third countries. Within the schools, the pandemic represented an opportunity to teach children about their civic responsibilities and involve parents more directly in children’s education. However, the lockdown also raised difficulties for all Saturday schools, not just Polish ones, when their credentials as ‘educational’ organisations seemed challenged by both UK government policy and some mainstream schools.

The aim of this article is to analyse the Polish migration policy. However, it is not about the content of the policy but about the gaps, paradoxes and stages of its creation. The thesis of the article is that the Polish migration policy created “from above” is full of paradoxes, which makes it internally incoherent. On the one hand, the economic logic of the market dictates that the policy should be open to foreigners, while the logic of the policy tends to be closed. In the phases of the migration policy-making cycle proposed in the article we cannot go beyond the second phase. “Policy on paper” is our domain. As it is constantly changing, we cannot move to the implementation and evaluation phase. This text is based on methods characteristic for political science and administration (institutional, systemic, decision-making) and legal science (legal-dogmatic).

The topic of migrant children becomes more popular not only in the public discourse but also in academic research. In Poland, the topic of migrant children has become more popular over the past decade due to mass immigration. However, most of the work concentrates on the macro-level topics, such as changes to the national curriculum, schools and teachers’ preparation and willingness to work with multicultural classes. Less research has focused on the socialization of children with a migrant background. Moreover, most of the existing work deals with adult-centred research, thus ignoring the importance of giving a voice to children in assessing one’s biographical experiences. This article presents the results of the empirical qualitative research based on a child-centred approach. The results come from 20 semi-structured interviews with migrant children in Poland. The analysis presents the main aspects of the perception of the Polish school by migrant children regarding education, socialization, and relations with teachers and peers.

Based on the recent experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper intends to analyze the act of teaching and subsequently learning in today’s post-COVID context, by summarizing positive and negative aspects of online education, as mentioned in various studies and surveys recently conducted worldwide. Furthermore, the paper presents the conclusions of a small survey conducted by the author during the pandemic, among students learning Language for specific purposes (LSP). The purpose of the paper is to corroborate the conclusions of these surveys, in support of the idea that the blended or hybrid approach might be regarded as an adequate solution to the post-COVID education, starting from the definition of blended learning as a mixture of face-to-face activities with online or digital tools.

For about two years, since March 2020, one of the key words in the teaching and learning process has often been “challenge”. Since then, experiences have been different for learners – schoolchildren, students, course participants – as well as for teachers at all educational levels. This research takes an insight into students opinions and experiences with online teaching; hence, I have conducted a survey among my students in REI and FABIZ at ASE at the beginning of the academic years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 hoping the results can be the starting point in the preparation of teaching that would allow me to meet their expectations as efficiently as possible in the online environment.

Autoethnography and complexity thinking should be carefully combined when studying the intersection of physical spaces, technology and healthcare communication education as it took place during COVID. This is the call that stems from a sequential examination of existing literature. Initially, this process identified that existing research tendencies emphasize the need to understand the role physical spaces have in educational processes and highlight the demand to inquire about the opinions of educators regarding these spaces. Subsequently, analysing the manner in which these tendencies are reflected in the literature connected to teaching during COVID, showed that published research demonstrates the evocative potential of educator autoethnographies. Concomitantly, three themes stood out in the examined works: 1. physical spaces form the taken-for-granted skeleton of human existence which can be further explored, 2. matters of communication dominate the literature and set-out many yet to be probed questions and 3. physical spaces, technology and education are undeniably and complexly connected. Altogether, these findings help make the argument that future studies should investigate different instances of the following overarching question: what can be learned about teaching healthcare communication during COVID by using a complexity sensitized autoethnographic investigation focused on the physical spaces-technology-education intersection?

This study is conducted with the aim of showing the interest of authentic documents in the teaching of French in Burundi. Il starts from a problem according to which the level of the pupils drops more and more. The starting hypothesis is that authentic documents, which are an essential tool in the teaching of a foreign language, would not be used enough by teachers and that this would be one of the causes of the low level of students in French. Through a survey of teachers, this work was able to show the opinions of each other as well as their wishes and suggestions. It has been noticed that most teachers use only the book as a teaching document, which means that some skills are not developed. This state of affairs depends on the one hand on the teachers who do not make a lot of effort to complete the already existing book, but on the other hand, the situation depends on other factors including the lack of training in the use of these tools as well as technical and maintenance problems including the lack of electricity in the classrooms.

Delivering an oral presentation requires mastery of all four language competencies. It also involves a thorough understanding of different linguistic registers and varieties. This involves focusing on non-verbal signs and gestures, with the precise aim of informing or persuading the audience. Therefore, evaluating these complex oral presentation skills can be challenging, especially if clear evaluation criteria are not established and followed through during the entire educational process. Our study aims (1) to identify an extensive educational assessment tool for oral presentation skills, and (2) to test the validity of this tool among our students during formative evaluation sessions. Our study involves two groups of university undergraduate students learning English for Specific Purposes. They are from the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Romania, and the Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria. Looking at the assessment intention from a communicative approach, in this research we stress the importance of the congruence between three educational stages – teaching, learning, and evaluation.

This research makes a return on the notion of the competence of the oral communication on the basis of a theoretical reference which draws on the sciences of language to unveil the difficulties tarnishing its teaching - learning at the Moroccan primary school. It aims to lead a reflection on the didactical approach of the oral to emphasize its shortcomings to endow the learners with discursive capacities nevertheless perceived as essential in any didactic project envisaging the acquisition of the competence of oral communication. We postulate that to explain the limits of the didactical approach of oral currently installed in the Moroccan primary school, it is interesting to stop on the acceptance that one gives to the notion of competence of communication. Our reflection, which was carried out through an examination of the different moments of implementation of this approach, shows a tendency to reduce the didactic intervention at the level of the sentence unit without taking into account the discourse as object of teaching-learning. Consequently, the discursive dimension does not constitute an issue of the so-called approach that seems to focus only on linguistic and socio-cultural capacities.

Located within an interpretivist paradigm, this study seeks to demonstrate the similaritiesin orthography between Turkish and Mauritian Creole with regard to the presence in bothof these languages of lexemes that do not have only the same pronunciation andorthography but bear the same or approximate semantic value in most cases. Thesesimilarities constitute an element of intrigue, as Turkish and Mauritian Creole are notcognate languages. Yet, this study invites a reflection on the interconnection throughmutual intelligibility, of these remote languages which are geographically located far apartfrom each other, one on the European and Asian border and the other in the Indian Ocean. The researcher adopts a synchronic approach to analyse aspects of both Turkish andMauritian Creole with regard to their respective lexicons. An International PhoneticAlphabet presentation illustrates the common sound patterns justifying the orthography ofeach language in the context of this study.

The article addresses the issue of the specific impact of music and the effect of its inclusion in the daily routine of children in preschool age at various moments besides in music classes. Given the complex process of musical development that requires constant contact of the children with music and opportunities for its reproduction, the two music classes provided for in the kindergarten curriculum are not sufficient. Through the integration of music into the other routine activities, the kindergarten becomes a specific environment, providing children with daily involvement in musical activities, which is an integral condition for successful musical development. The publication outlines two different approaches to communication with musical works, each of which contributes in a specific way to the formation and development of the ability to perceive music and to express oneself through music.

The paper discusses gender issues and the reception of female musicians in Slovakia.Using historical analysis, the author examines the establishment of, and behaviourtowards, females in various genres from classical to jazz, alternative rock andelectronic music. Whilst the acceptance of classical female composers began fortyyears ago, their jazz and rock counterparts were disadvantaged by a twenty-yeardelay. It was not until 2000 that female instrumentalists started to gain attentionfrom audiences as drummers, bassists, or guitarists. Based on the evaluationof a survey of Slovakian alternative rock players, a study of their careers, and acomparison of selected artists, the writer analyses issues relating to the acceptanceof female composers and instrumentalists in Slovakia. The vast majority of researchparticipants, who are musically educated, identified market size as one of the barriersfor female musicians. With regard to audience perception of females on stage, half ofthe respondents stated that gender predominates, and the rest, on the other hand, believed that the quality of music-making had a greater significance.

The aim of this article is to analyse the phenomenon of domestic violence from a human rights perspective. Throughout the article I will present the evolution of perceptions regarding gender equality indicators, the legislative framework and the situation of cases brought to court. I also consider it essential to introduce a brief analysis of the social assistance system in Romania. It is very important that the risk factors and established triggers of domestic violence are brought into question, in order to better understand the dynamics and perceptions that contribute to such manifestations. My personal interest in the topic of domestic violence arose from my collaboration with the National Agency for Equal Opportunities, with whom I am participating in the VERA project, carried out by the Catalactica Association. The Vera project is a national study on domestic violence. Participating in this project gave me a broader perspective on the studied phenomenon, and some of the information I consider fundamental in the analysis of domestic violence is included in this article, such as statistical data, social context and literature. Domestic violence, like any other form of violence, is a violation of human rights. This phenomenon must be treated as a public social problem, the causes and effects of which go beyond the sphere of private life.

The current research focuses on the use of audiovisual media services in the political scene and tries to explore the political marketing and advertising concepts on which these media/services are based. As a holistic approach, this research explores the citizen-voter as well as the politician concerning political advertising and audiovisual media/services. It separates the audiovisual media into traditional and new ones. So, primarily, this research empirically investigates the politicians’ profiles (high-ranked politicians, parliament, and regional ones) to determine the type and use of audiovisual media in terms of political information, statements, communication, and advertising. Moreover, it establishes the citizen/voter’s profile in terms of political information, political advertising, and communication received from politicians and political parties. Finally, it is a study with the same conceptual dimensions between the politician and the citizen/voter to establish the basis for creating a conceptual framework-tool of their typology that will contribute to a holistic view of political marketing and political advertising through the use of traditional and new audiovisual media. Findings about politicians show relationships between audiovisual media reliability and political statement actions. The success of political advertising has multiple positive effects, as well as political communication via audiovisual services also plays an important role. Furthermore, models were created concerning the use of audiovisual media services for political statements and the impact of audiovisual media services on the intention to vote. In addition, the results from the politicians indicate several differences regarding the characteristics of the politicians and their profile as a user of audiovisual media services in political advertising. Findings about voters show that the reliability of audiovisual media services is a very important factor for political information.

Air pollution communication and engagement are vital on the road to solving this environmental and health problem. Three main groups tend to engage in it and communicate with citizens: civil society/non-governmental organizations (NGOs), media, and governments. This paper studies how these actors interact in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, as research on air pollution engagement on a city level in Eastern Europe is very limited. This article finds that a “bottom-up” model worked in air pollution engagement in Sofia. Civil society initiatives spark conversations with their actions and can create narratives for the media to cover. When the media started to cover the issue, more and more citizens became aware of it. Thus, pressure is put on local governments to also engage on the topic, with it being the last stakeholder to do so.
