„Zupełnie inny świat”. O obcości i swojskości w polskich przekładach powieści Mileny Agus, Marioliny Venezii i Melanii Mazzucco

The article examines the reception of Polish translations of the most popular novels by Milena Agus, Mariolina Venezia and Melania Mazzucco – three young Italian writers whose books have been recently published in Poland. The study focuses on the notions of “extraneousness” and “familiarity”, present in the analyzed novels on the level of the original text and even amplified in the Polish translation. The narration seems to fluctuate between these two opposite ideas and the translator’s main task seems to be the ability to express in the target language every single nuance of “the extraneous” and “the familiar” in the same way as they were perceived and understood in the original text. The article is divided into two parts: the first one deals with the concept of extraneousness and familiarity analyzed only in the original texts. The second part investigates the questions of translation strategies chosen by Polish translators of the analyzed novels.

The purpose of this article is to present translators of Polish literary works of Antonio Fogazzaro. The reading of the correspondence preserved in the Archives of the Library Bertoliana in Vicenza has led to the discovery of the true names of the translators, who for such a long time remained unknown. In the article we present the works of Fogazzaro in the order they were published and their translations as they appeared in Polish during the years of 1898–1984.

Parateksty polskich przekładów z literatury włoskiej w czasach stalinowskich

The aim of the article is to present the strategy of political manipulation in the paratexts which contain the translations of Italian literature in Poland of Stalinist era. To demonstrate different editorial procedures, the analysis takes into consideration two most significant examples: three editions of the novel by Renata Viganò entitled "Agnese va a morire" (the first two from 1951, the third from 1955) and the publication of a fragment of the novel by Elio Vittorini entitled "Sempione strizza l’occhio al Frejus" in “Przekrój” magazine in 1953. The selection of these examples shows a specific modal frame into which the translations of Italian Literature were forced. Due to that procedure, the Italian novel could be read in connection with other propaganda texts which constitute the intertextual context, determine the interpretation key and intensify the propaganda message.

Na trasie Breslau–Breslavia: o włoskich przekładach prozy Marka Krajewskiego

The article is a short analysis of Italian editions of two novels by Marek Krajewski: "Death in Breslau" and "The End of the World in Breslau", which were translated by Valentina Parisi for Einaudi publishing house. Some aspects of the translations were compared to the original − for example topographical names, colloquial phrases and the use of footnotes. The article discusses a few of the translator’s choices. Some of them are assessed as right, some − as doubtful or mistaken. All in all though, the translator’s work is rated as successful.

"Bar Italia" Stefana Benniego: mikrokosmos nie do przetłumaczenia?

"Bar Sport" by Stefano Benni is a magnificent example of a text filled with homeliness as it describes the author’s compatriots and their drawbacks, far-fetched ambitions and forbidden desires by means of a humorous, paradoxical deformation. In this process, functioning as a kind of a collective, amusing psychotherapy, Benni creates a micro universe in a little bar occupied by bizarre individuals, where, like in a magnifying glass, clearly appears a picture of an average Italian, which prevails in the common, collective imagination of Italians themselves. Therefore this text becomes particularly exotic and incomprehensive for foreigners, due to a width of the so-called ‘silence margin’, which forces the translator to commit heavy interferences in the text or footnotes in order to fill in the informational void that follows it.

O włoskich przekładach poezji Tadeusza Micińskiego

The poetry by Tadeusz Miciński (1873–1918), particularly prone to misreadings because of its complexity, has never been very popular in Italy. Nevertheless, translators’ attention to Miciński’s writings is worth being studied from the comparative point of view. Firstly, limited reception of Miciński’s writings in foreign context may suggest various considerations on literary and non-literary reasons of its „absence” in Italian culture (such as unsuccessful translation or hermeticism of the text). Moreover, careful reading of the Italian versions may broaden horizons of eventual reflection on translatability or non-translatability of a literary text.

The rapid fall of dominoes in Eastern Europe took world public opinion by surprise, and analysts everywhere are still arguing about the causes and consequences of that unusual historical development. I propose to present in this paper my own assessment. To begin with, I recall that three years ago, in an article in The International Herald Tribune (3 September 1987) I rebuked those who were emphasizing the stubborn resistance of Eastern European nations to the drive for change initiated in Moscow by Mikhail Gorbachev, and, on the basis of a different appraisal of the situation, I concluded with a prophetic sentence: "By 1990 a new political generation will be in command all over Eastern Europe."

The world knows that communism in Eastern Europe collapsed in 1989, and that the USSR set out on a path that not only promises the end of socialism but threatens its very territorial integrity. But knowing this does not explain why it all happened. Nor are the implications of all these revolutionary events as clear as the immediate, short-run strategic effects that follow from the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. There are many ways of looking at the "Revolution of 1989".

Havel and Habermas on Identity and Revolution

A few months before the November 1989 collapse of "real eXIstIng socialism" in Central and Eastern Europe, Habermas reflected on the revolutionary ideas of 1789. How is one to think within plural and secular modernity about a radical democratic republic? He notes the paradox of post-traditional ethical self-realization and moral self-determination: social revolutions project contents and forms that in a finite way transcend the revolutionary action, but revolution shipwrecks before the project gets off the ground. He proposes that to overcome the "sorrow" and the "melancholy" of projected revolutionary possibility, one must form posttraditional identities in those life-forms which are nurtured by a "permanent and everyday-becoming revolution. “
