Cognitive, Emotional, Behavioral and Physiological Evaluation of the Relationship Between Brain and Gut Microbiota

Author(s): Selim Günüç,Aylin Şendemir / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: Gut; brain; microbiota; HPA; behavior; cognition; mood;

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of gut microbiota on brain functions, mood and psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and behavioral addictions, neurotransmitter levels, cognitive processes such as self-control, decision making and delayed gratification. In this context, the relevant literature was reviewed and the findings were evaluated. The relationships of the bidirectional communication between the brain-gut axis with cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physiological processes were explained with a diagram. As a result, although more research is needed on this subject, it has been observed that the brain-gut axis is bidirectionally established through neural, stress, endocrine and immune systems. In this bidirectional communication process, there are interactions in the context of cognitive, emotional, behavioral and other physiological factors. These factors both individually enter into bidirectional relationships with the brain and gut microbiota and are affected by the bidirectional communication between the brain and gut.

Biographical Study with Hermeneutic Approach in Psychiatric Care Delivered at Community Mental Health Centers

Biographical Study with Hermeneutic Approach in Psychiatric Care Delivered at Community Mental Health Centers

Author(s): Beyhan Bag / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: Community mental health; biography study; psychiatric care;

When the literature studies on the services provided in community mental health centers (CMHCs) are carefully evaluated, it is seen that there are research results with positive feedback. On the other hand, a structured daily work standard has not yet been reached regarding the psychiatric care services provided in the increasing number of centers. In order to establish such a standardized work, there is a need for nurses to carry different approaches to the services they provide to sick individuals to their practice areas. Biography study, which can be defined in general terms as the use of the possibilities available to the individual in the process of coping with the events affecting his/her life, is compatible with the need for the formation of community mental health centers and the understanding of multidisciplinary work as such an application area. In this article, the introduction of biography work, its transfer to psychiatric care practice services in CMHC and the interpretation of the individual’s life story narrative with a hermeneutic approach are discussed.

Psychobiotics and Elderly Health

Psychobiotics and Elderly Health

Author(s): Nardane Düdükçü,Serdal Öğüt / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: Probiotics; elderly; diet; food; nutrition;

While aging with physiological dimensions refers to the changes seen with chronological age, on the other hand, aging with psychological dimensions refers to the change of humans’ capacity to adaptively. Such as learning, psychomotor, problem-solving and personality traits. With the improvement of life quality in recent years, the average life expectancy and therefore the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases among the elderly have also increased. Although the aging process is universal, progressive, gradual and unstoppable, human gut microbiota-targeted aging management is a new approach to health and anti-aging. Nutrition plays a big factor in the elderly population with providing adequate cognitive and physical functions and when taking the right nutrition it also reduces the risk of chronic diseases. When adding functional foods into the diet, it can play a significant role to reduce the risk of diet-related diseases. Such as probiotics and prebiotics. In recent years, a new subclass of probiotics called ‘psychobiotics’ has emerged. These psychobiotics are defined as probiotics that, when taken in appropriate amounts, it creates positive psychiatric effects in human psychopathology. Examination of this new class of probiotics provides a glimmer of hope for the effective management of neurodegenerative diseases and various psychiatric disorders, especially with increasing life expectancy. Also, recommending the use of probiotics in old age will contribute to the treatment of some health problems related to aging.

Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Intergroups Inequalities: The Case of Women

Author(s): Deniz Eniç / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: Pandemic; women; gender; inequality;

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has crucial implications for intergroup inequalities. The main aims of the current study are to examine how the COVID-19 affects inequalities between women and men, understand the causes of increasing gender-based inequalities during pandemic, and offer practical solutions on how these inequalities can be reduced. The results of studies from different countries demonstrated that genderbased inequalities that existed before the pandemic deepened with the COVID-19. After the COVID-19, there has been a serious rise in the level of physical, psychological and economic violence that women are exposed to, the labor they spend on housework and caring has increased dramatically, and the problems they face in business life ascended. Understanding why gender-based inequalities have increased during the COVID-19 is one of the influential steps to achieve gender equality. When the reasons are examined, it has been determined that many factors, including the policies implemented in the struggle against the pandemic and gender roles, play critical roles in this rise. Finally, in order to diminish gender-based inequalities, short and long-term solutions are presented such as carrying out gender-based awareness education, adequate representations of women in decision-making processes, developing gender-sensitive policies, strengthening the mechanisms that support women.

Moral Grandstanding as a Narcissistic Intrinsic Satisfaction

Author(s): Gamze Şen,Elif Manuoğlu / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2022

Keywords: Moral grandstanding; motivation; aspirations; narcissism; social media;

The aim of this study is to define the concept of moral grandstanding and discuss its antecedents, motivations behind it, and implications. Moral grandstanding is described as contributing to moral discourse to persuade others that one is morally respectable. Individuals who value their moral standing are more concerned about their own self than the topics that they claim to discuss. Therefore, it is likely that individuals who perform moral grandstanding may be high on the narcissistic personality trait. Although moral grandstanding can bring about reputation and fame to individuals, it can be associated with society contribution in some cases. While advertising their prosocial behavior, individuals’ true motivation may not be obvious. Thus, it is essential to understand their actual motivation for the behavior in question as well as their level of narcissism in order to understand whether the behavior is considered as an example of moral grandstanding. Pathological narcissism and the intrinsic-extrinsic motivation concept of self-determination theory were used to extend the current understanding of the moral grandstanding concept in the present study. Lastly, the real-life implications of moral grandstanding were discussed with reference to current issues like the ongoing pandemic.

DYNAMIC EFFECTS OF HEALTH EXPENDITURE SHOCKS ON HIV PREVALENCE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Author(s): Bernhard Ozofere Ishioro / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2022

Keywords: Health Expenditure shocks; HIV prevalence; Health Expenditure; Sub-Saharan Africa;

This study has investigated the dynamic effects of health expenditure shocks on the mitigation of HIV prevalence in sub-Sahara African region using aggregate time series data. HIV prevalence rate for adults and four components of health expenditure: health expenditure per capita, private health expenditure, public health expenditure and total health expenditure were used as the proxies in our models. Apart from the unit root and the cointegration tests, we also applied the Vector Autoregressive model in the analysis of the impacts of the patterns of persistent common variations of health expenditure shocks transmitted to HIV prevalence and from HIV prevalence to health expenditure. The study established that the response of HIV Prevalence to health expenditure shocks was equi-proportional and prompt. Furthermore, our results indicated that a positive HIV prevalence shock would lead to a consistently diverging negative responses from the health expenditure variables; suggesting that a rise in the tempo of HIV prevalence would exert a persistently negative inter-period effects on health expenditures. The study recommended that health expenditures in the sub-Saharan region should be well-managed in order to mitigate the spread of HIV prevalence effectively and sustainably.

DO INSTITUTIONAL QUALITY, FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT, AND MIGRANT WORKERS’ REMITTANCES IMPROVE CURRENT ACCOUNT BALANCE? EVIDENCE FROM MENA COUNTRIES

Author(s): Rihab Bousnina,Foued Badr Gabsi / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2022

Keywords: Current account balance; Financial development; Institutions and the Macroeconomy; Remittances; Nonlinear panel ARDL; MENA countries;

This article examines the relationship between the current account, workers' remittances, and financial development while taking into Institutional quality in 14 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region over the period 1995-2020, using nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL). By applying the index of political stability and absence of violence/terrorism as a measure of the Institutional environment and two indicators representing financial development, we found that financial development has a significant positive effect on the current account. This clearly reveals the complementarity between financial development and remittances to stimulate the current account balance. Furthermore, we highlight that the variable measuring political stability is negatively related to the current account balance, which implies that an increase in political Instability increases remittances inflows for the specific case of MENA countries. These results suggest an altruistic motivation for the MENA migrant's decision to transfer.

FINANCIAL SECTOR DEVELOPMENT AND INDUSTRIAL PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION

Author(s): Wahid Damilola Olanipekun,Emmanuel Oloke,Lateef Taiwo,Timothy Ayomitunde Aderemi / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2022

Keywords: Financial Sector; M3; Interest Rate; Exchange Rate and Credit;

Financial development is one of the most important prerequisites for rapid and sustained industrial. Against this backdrop, this study utilized the techniques of Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares and Granger causality to appraise the relationship between financial sector development and industrial performance in Nigeria between 1990 and 2019. The findings that came up in the study are presented as follow; out of the three principal variables used to proxy financial sector development in this study, two of them- M3 and interest rate have both direct and significant interlink with industrial performance in Nigeria. As such the study concludes that financial development contributes to a positive and significant industrial performance in Nigeria. The findings from direction of causality show that a unidirectional feedback relationship flows from industrial performance to interest rate in one hand and one way feedback relationship flows from total credit to private to broad money supply on the other hand. In view of these findings, this study recommends the following for the policymakers in Nigeria, and by extension policymakers in Africa that whenever these policymakers desire to achieve industrial development, policy that will drive the development of financial sector should be embarked upon. In addition, the Nigerian monetary authorities should ensure that adequate credit is disbursed to private sector in order to drive better industrial performance in the country.

The study investigates the effect of inflation on the liquidity of the Nigerian stock market using annual time series data from 1981 to 2020. The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of inflation on the liquidity of the Nigerian stock market by applying the Fisher Hypothesis and taking cognizance of interest and exchange rates as important control macroeconomic variables. We employed the unit root tests, cointegration and the ARDL Bounds Testing Technique in our econometric processes. The result of the unit root test shows a mixed order of integration. Therefore, we applied the ARDL Bound test in analyzing the series. Our results revealed that inflation rate has a positive and significant effect on Nigeria stock exchange liquidity within the period reviewed, affirming the Fisher hypothesis of 1930. More so, exchange and interest rates are significant with positive and negative impact on the market liquidity. The estimated regression line has a good fit and generally significant, and above all satisfies all the post test of normality, serial correlation, and recursive test of stability. The study recommends that, a reduction of personal income tax be enacted as a law in order to boost savings and investments in the market.

The New National “We” in the Slavia Orthodoxa Circle in the 20th-Century Balkans

The New National “We” in the Slavia Orthodoxa Circle in the 20th-Century Balkans

Author(s): Jolanta Sujecka / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2019

Keywords: Slavia Orthodoxa; narod as people-nation; Geo Milev; Ljubomir Micić; barbarogenius;

The article outline the development of the new national “we” in texts from the Slavia Orthodoxa area in the Balkans during both Balkan wars and World War I. The analysis will focus on the notion of народ [narod], which should be translated as people-nation and not people or nation, as is usually the case not only in the practice of translators but also very frequently in academic discourse. Thus, the notion of people-nation is considered here as an analytical key making it possible to present the problem put forward in the title, but also as an illustration of the Balkan perception of war and revolution within Slavia Orthodoxa. The analysis will encompass the poetry and articles of Bulgarian poet Geo Milev (1895–1925) as well as the barbarogenius concept developed by Ljubomir Micić (1895–1971), a Serb from the Military Frontier. The context that will serve as a point of reference will be the 19th century in both the Serbian and Bulgarian version. This seemingly broad space and time framework is essential to explain the change in how the notion of народ was understood, a change caused by the Balkan wars, World War I and the revolution and introduced by representatives of the Avant-garde. The panchronic perspective used in the analysis involves explaining contemporary cultural facts with the help of both synchrony and diachrony in the process of text analysis.

Author(s): Alis Stratan / Language(s): English / Issue: 7/2023

Keywords: Philosophy for children; eco-philosophy; moral values; nature; anthropocentrism;

A development in our understanding of our own nature has implications at different levels. Of great relevance are the ecological consequences, considered of most importance for our future life on earth. For decades environmental ethics has been trying to find possible answers and solutions. An increasing number of ecological movements talk about the necessity of a deeper change, one which confronts the status qvo and determines important changes in the way humans perceive their place and role in the natural ecosystem. However, the importance of children`s role in this endeavor is neglected and reduced to simple approaches: spending more time outdoor and/or offering more theoretical lessons on biology. The content will show that children have the natural inclination, the inborn values and also the capacity to undergo a philosophical process for a deeper understanding of nature and themselves. This paper purpose is to underline the importance of children in the odyssey of change and the necessity of a philosophical approach. Equally, to show possibilities of practicing eco-philosophy for children that could represent a starting point for future initiatives in education.
