Constructing the museum space: the case of the Bulgarian ethnographic museums

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the practices of choosing a suitable building for the museum and its adoption during the second half of the XXth century. The analyzed cases are chosen between Bulgarian museums specialized in ethnography or having such a department. The case study aims to fi nd out the techniques and mechanisms of decision making when constructing the museum image. The author considers the museum professionals and the state authorities as the subjects of management of the cultural institution. The result of the interaction between them has been interpreted in the context of museum’s integration into the potential visitors’ collective memory. By adopting the building the Museum alone defines itself. Its space features keep information about the priorities of the Museum’s activities in different stages of its history. Indeed, the relationship between the museum and its building depend on the willingness of the state authority as a financial character.
