Summary/Abstract: The article focuses the attention on two similar examples from museum history: the National Ethnographic Museum in Bulgaria and Rijksmuseum voor Volken¬kunde (RMV) in Holland. The purpose of the paper is, through the analysis of the available information about the activities of the two museums, to arrive at the causes, underlying the similarities and the differences. The problems of the two ethnographic museums are, above all, problems of the theory of museum upkeep, including the principles of management of the cultural institution. The assessment of the effectiveness of museum activity should not be sought in its relationship with the science, in which it is specialized. It is a function solely of the professionalism in the presentation of the scientific product and the identification of mission and audiences. The impact of the network of links with state institutions and public organizations influences the policy of the museum and the image it builds about itself. The comprehension of this logical construct is a key to resolving the setbacks in the contemporary situation in the Bulgarian museums.
