Friends of the National Ethnographic Museum Project

Summary/Abstract: This text has the purpose of publicly presenting the conception about friends of the National Ethnographic Museum at the Ethnographic Institute and Museum with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, in view of its future implementation. By presenting the foreign traditions along these lines, and their integration into such a project, taking into account the specific socio-economic situation in Bulgaria, the article puts forward a variant for the settlement of most of the problems of the identity of this particular museum. It also presents an opportunity for an open debate on the responsibility of society for museum development, which has so far been absent among professional circles in Bulgaria. The underlying cause has been the conviction that the state has been the only one that had to take care of the cultural heritage, as well as the habits from the totalitarian period, when the relationship between the museum and the audience was mediated by socio-political organizations, and visiting museums was obligatory and en masse.
