Considerations on English for Specific Purposes. Challenges and Possible Technological Solutions

Summary/Abstract: For many decades now, language specialists have narrowed down their research from English for General Purposes (EGP) to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) as a consequence of several changes in the perspective of the foreign language learning/teaching. These changes include the focus on the learner’s needs, the professional communication, the need for profession-tailored language courses, etc. The purpose of the present article is to offer an overview on the ESP in general. Divided into 6parts, it presents a short history of ESP, its research areas, ESP challenges and a few ways in which technology is used in foreign language teaching, when the pandemic brought the necessity of using the technology for educational purposes more than ever.
