Remember your name! : (on the issue of state names)

Summary/Abstract: The present paper is devoted to the problem of coexistence in modern Russian language of name variations so-called former Union Republics: Кыргызстан—Киргизия, Беларусь—Белоруссия, Туркменистан—Туркмения, Молдова—Молдавия. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the success rate of new names and their place in the system of modern Russian language. The author cites government documents that record different variations of names, refers to the linguistic dictionaries and to the Russian National Corpus. According to the author, artificial introduction in the 90s of the 20th century of new variants state names was on the one hand, a democratic gesture, and on the other hand, a rash decision, that led a lot of linguistic problems.
