Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to the problem of determining the grammatical gender of nouns with a soft sign at the end. The article analyzes the approach of the authors of the first Russian grammars to this problem. Based on the data of the modern grammatical dictionary, the author identifies several models of nouns with a soft sign at the end. The study claims that there are certain patterns between the formal side of a nown and its grammatical gender. Theoretical comments and practical materials may be of interest to teachers of Russian as a foreign language.
