Summary/Abstract: Compound adjectives are an open class of combined words, whose spelling is always problematic. The article focuses on the problem of hyphenation vs solid spelling of compound adjectives. The author addresses the history of this issue (The Rules of Russian Spelling and Punctuation (1956); a draft of the Code of Russian Spelling Rules (2000); The Rules of Russian Spelling and Punctuation (2006)). The article analyses the competition between the semantic-syntactic and formal grammatical principles of compound-word spelling. The author cites various spelling dictionaries and comments on the reasons for the codification of a certain spelling variant. The author also refers to the Russian National Corpus and other Internet resources that demonstrate how the analysed words function in real written discourse. The article compares the data from dictionaries and the usage of the analysed compound words in the modern Russian language. The author draws conclusions about the reasons why certain spelling variants dominate.
