Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the characteristic features of society of the Balts in the early Middle Ages; it also defines the period when the phenomena and concepts of dukes, military leaders, and warrior elite appeared in society of the Balts. The issue of ethnicity is also raised in the article, and the relationships among the ethnic groups such as the Goths, Huns, Avars and the Balts at the dawn of Europe’s political emergence are disclosed.
