Summary/Abstract: The paper refers to a question of translation equivalents of some proper names, e.g. Eden, Decapolis, in some of the Slavonic translations of the Bible – differing as to their sources, language, translation strategies, confessional circumstances and translation tradition. It is proven, that the process of translating the names may consist of several levels, and the repertoire of translation equivalents depends on both the name’s ethymology and semantic and symbolic connotations this name evokes. A great numer of Biblical names oscillates in a transition zone between proper names and common words.
