Summary/Abstract: Beyond the suggestion included in the title, the novel Denier du rêve of the writer Marguerite Yourcenar has nothing to do with the nocturnal dream, illustrated in another work with a similar title –the 1938 collection of dream transcripts, Les Songes et les Sorts. On the contrary, the novel is anchored in the diurnal register of the onirical, having two updates - daydreaming and voluntary illusion. These two imaginary constructions function as defence mechanisms available for the nine characters, confronted with unbearable life circumstances. This paper discusses the manner in which the diurnal concerns of the characters are to be found in their imaginary escapes of biographical, religious, political or artistic nature, trying to define the two forms of onirical activity
