Summary/Abstract: This article examines the difficult conditions and challenges of the ministry of Bishop Cyril of Jerusalem, as well as the responsibilities he faced. It discusses the situation of the church in Jerusalem in the 4th century, in relation to the policy of Christianising the empire and making Palestine the Holy Land, initiated by Emperor Constantine. It discusses the thorny issue of Arianism in fourth-century Palestine, the problem of Cyril's orthodoxy, Cyril's vision of ecclesiastical policy, his disagreements with Acacius, Bishop of Caesarea, and the story of Cyril's three exiles. Cyril's catechetical teachings are used to analyse his concern for the dangers to Christianity in the context of the religious pluralism that characterised the late Roman Empire. It also looks at Bishop Cyril's broad programme of responsibilities in the service of the Church in Jerusalem.
