Summary/Abstract: Formative assessment and evaluation have the potential to support teaching and learning in the classroom. This was also recognized by the creators of educational policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and formative evaluation as an approach to the system of monitoring, evaluation and assessment was included in the guidelines for curriculum development. Methods, procedures and application of formative assessment and evaluation are an important aspect of the educational process that requires the competence of the teacher to carry out evaluation, quality preparation and application of the process of assessment and evaluation during classes. This enables continuous monitoring of student progress and the quality of the teaching and learning process. In the paper, we highlight the advantages and certain disadvantages of formative assessment and give an example of formative assessment and evaluation in the first grade of elementary school. Experiences from the classroom show that in this way, students learn to self-assess their own work.
