Summary/Abstract: In this paper I address the definition of global civil society, describing its implications for sovereignty, identity, civism and democracy, and outline the criteria for an evaluation of global civil society. Global civil society is defined as the civil society that addresses world issues, including cross-border communication, which is organized on a global basis, and which operates on the basis of supraterritorial solidarity. In taking the view that global civil society is neither good nor bad per se, I embark on the quest for both the promises and the dangers proffered by the concept.
