Translation in the Development of Arab Studies according to Ahmed Smajlović in Falsafatu l-istishraqi wa ataruha fi l-adabi l-`arabiyyi l-mu`asiri

Summary/Abstract: The few European authors who focused on the significance of Arab Islamic thought in European renaissance include Ahmed Smajlović, whose doctoral thesis is the subject of this paper, in slightly re-edited form. Ahmed Smajlović insists that in the times of the most lively, direct contacts between Eastern and Western cultures, Oriental and Arab studies did not always exert negative influences. Some of the actors of those contacts should be credited for uncovering the Arab Islamic heritage, for its promotion and preservation. Classical Arab scholars played an important role in preserving the Eastern heritage, particularly Greek. Although the Greek heritage influenced the European renaissance mainly thanks to Arab scholars' contribution, numerous authors deny their significance in this area. Arabic translations and their critical reviews prove the Arabic dedication and reliability in mediation. They never forged anything, unlike the Arab scholars who were not spared when translating the Qur’an and other theological texts. Due to all this, the current biases should be removed and Arabs should be allowed to take the credit they are due and assume their rightful place in the family of nations.
