Culturological theories of translation

Summary/Abstract: As an academic activity, translation is closely associated with many other academic disciplines. Whereas translation was most closely linked with lingl guistic studies in the classical period, and with comparative literary studies in the post-classical period, in our day it is most widely used in the context of comprehensive culturological studies. Just as translation contributes to the enrichment of culture, so to the same extent the demands of culture determine the trajectory and extent of translation activities. Culturological theories of translation are based on the philosophical teachings of George Steiner on hermeneutics, the aesthetic views of Ezra Pound on re-empowering language, and Walter Benjamin’s distinctive views on pure language. A culturological approach to translation requires one to reject the view of the transparency of the translater, where the actor features merely as a neutral mediator between the two languages and cultures brought into contact by translation.
