Summary/Abstract: Dumitru A. Vanca, priest, doctor of theology and lecturer at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia, has recently researched and published Rânduiala diaconstvelor - The Missal of Deacons - printed in Alba Iulia in 1687. In his study, Father Dumitru Vanca convincingly shows how the Romanian translation of the typicon in the Priest’s Service Book (Diaconstve) (year 1687) resembles that of the missal from Bucharest 1680. We note that the Romanian renditions of the prayers intoned by the deacon, the choir and the priest clearly resemble the translation used by Antim Ivireanul in his missal (1706, 1713). Whole passages overlap perfectly, but there are also differences, ranging from words shifts, wording changes or phrase deletions. The printing and the study of the Diaconstve open a new perspective to the research on how the liturgical service has become widespread in Romanian. This process seems to have been rather the result of the work of many scholars (who thus responded to the natural development of the cult), than that of some private initiative(s).
