Summary/Abstract: Apples are the most widely grown orchard crop in Bulgaria. Plant protection is an extremely difficult task in organic apple production. Apple trees are infected by many pathogens the most important of which are Venturia inaequalis (Spiloceae pomi), Podosphaera leucotricha (OIdium farinosum), Erwinia amylovora etc. Only copper and sulfur agents can be used for chemical control of apple diseases in organic farming, because they are of mineral origin. Currently authorized plant protection products in organic apple farming are 15 products, eight based on copper and seven based on sulfur. They have been registered to protect apples against the most economically important diseases: scabies, powdery mildew and fire blight.
