Summary/Abstract: Peter Blos is one of the leading psychoanalysts in the field of diagnosis and therapy of mental development and functioning of children and adolescents. His writings attempted to elaborate some of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic views regarding adolescence. They were also greatly influenced by the views of Erik Erikson, with whom they were close associates. His research was largely concerned with various childhood and adolescent symptoms reflecting anxiety in the quest for autonomization and development of one's own personality. He considered the psychotherapeutic situation as a primary tool and believed that achieving comfort in working relationships was a central challenge in working with adolescents, where mutual understanding was a major consideration. The purpose of this paper is to present some of Peter Blos' ideas regarding psychotherapeutic work with adolescents, as well as some of his technical understanding that addresses specific patient resistances – acting “out” and “in” regarding the dynamics of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The “language” of behavioral responses can often be perceived as more informative than the verbal content we interpret at different levels of professional meta-analysis.
