Summary/Abstract: Famous for his contradictory character and thus described by the poet Mihai Eminescu in his poem The Imitators as “an unexplained mysterious person”, Ion Heliade Rădulescu surprised once more the Romanian political and cultural environment towards the end of his life. Whereas in 1866 he had openly manifested his opposition about the coming of a foreign prince and the dynasty, three years later in 1869, on the occasion of the marriage of Charles the Ist to Elisabeth, he dedicated to the ruling family a free interpretation of the Song of Songs that could not be ignored by his contemporaries. In front of such a text, his contemporaries were not surprised by the contadictory spirit of the author, but they were completely shocked about the raw and direct language of the text.
