Summary/Abstract: The global economic crisis which hit the Czech Republic in 2008 had its impact on the labour market. A substantial rise in unemployment was recorded in 2009. This year, however, measures hindering access to social benefits for the unemployed, entered into force. The intention of those measures was, as in other European countries, to encourage the unemployed to return quickly to the labour market and to achieve savings in public budgets. The aim of presented paper is, firstly, to carry out the research on the effects of economic recession in 2009 on the labour market, and secondly, to find out the impact of high unemployment on spending on social benefits for the unemployed.
