Summary/Abstract: Non-life insurance market development may be assessed according to a variety of indicators. Gross written premium development, profitability of gross written premium, claims and other expense ratios development belong among the elementary indicators. The objective of this article is to focus on the development of the above mentioned key characteristics and based on it to assess a trend in non-life insurance market in the Czech Republic in previous years. The data were observed in the most significant non-life insurance companies, whose market share measured by gross written premium in 2009 represented more than 90 %. Since 2005 to 2009 gross written premium was increasing moderately and its structure in terms of gross written premium according to lines of business was stable. Profitability of written premium in the observed period was high and even was increasing continuously, which can be explained by high insurance rates, particularly in the motor third party liability insurance („MTPL“).
