Summary/Abstract: In the article, the ethical ideas of the 16th-century French philosopher and public figure Michel Montaigne are considered. In order to avoid the traditional dogmatic form of expression of thought, Montaigne deliberately chose the essay genre. In his essays, he developed Epicurean-type empiricist ethics, based on principles of personal freedom, human dignity, and rich everyday practical experience.
