Summary/Abstract: In classic literature, as well as in a number of contemporary works, the notions of hadith and sunnah are very often identified with each other. In those works they appear as complete synonyms. However, when their etymological meaning is considered, their understanding in hadith and other Islamic sciences and historical development of the concepts of these notions, then we come to the conclusion that these notions have significant adjoining points, and the differences too because of which they are to be differently considered and understood. It can be said that, while in the etymological sense the words hadith and sunnah, to a large extent, have contradictory meanings, so hadith marks something what is new and newly emerged, sunnah understands something that lasts and has the continuity in the terminological sense. When these terms are used within the meaning of Islamic traditions, they are sometimes complete synonyms, and sometimes have completely opposed meanings. Anyway, one should have in mind that sunnah has threefold meaning and that the mutual meanings of the notions sunnah and hadith depends on its meaning.
