Summary/Abstract: Bulgarian TV series Captain Petko Voivode (1981) was the craze of the day, making literally a national hero of Vasil Mikhailov, the male lead in the film. The series became a significant cultural phenomenon of Bulgarian socialist life. How are TV series related to mass culture and what are the mechanisms that filmmakers in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria have been forced to use in their works and what the response of the audiences following the broadcasting of the series has been are all aspects of the issue as to what has made Captain Petko Voivode a significant cultural phenomenon of its time.
