Summary/Abstract: The present study highlights some essential aspects of the cultural and spiritual activity of Saint Paisie Velicicosvschi, integrated in the historical and ecclesiastical context of the Romanian Principalities in the 18th century. The historical particularities, the „Eastern question”, the Phanariot rule of the Principalities, as well as the autonomy of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Moldavia and Wallachia – far from the Islamic influence and in good relationship with the other local Orthodox Churces – are only a few aspects that we have underlined in order to outline the circumstances in which the Paisian hesychast movement developed in this area. Basing my research on bibliographical literature, I have presented the main moments of St. Paisie’s life, highlighting the important aspects of his teaching and how they were implemented in the monasteries where he lived and then continued by his disciples, both in the Romanian territories and abroad. The work of St. Paisie is not innovative in the tradition of the Eastern Church, the hesychast movement having a long Athonite and patristic history, but represents a powerful revival of 18th century monasticism in an age dominated by rationalism.
