Cultural confluences from the first decades of the 20th century and the relations of some Romanian personalities with the French academic world

Summary/Abstract: The article explores the interesting world of cultural debates between romanian and french scholars, in the first half of the 20th century, from literature and economics to the passion for stamp collecting. Through the correspondence we are able to observe the themes debated in interwar academia and the close links with the French world. Emmanuel de Martonne's letter describes the situation in France and Romania during the First World War, shortly before Romania entered the war, considering his reasearches regarding Romanian geography inspired by his friend, Pompiliu Eliade, and the contribution he had at the Peace negotiations. We also observe in the letter the conditions under which correspondence circulated in war-torn Europe. Nicolae Eremie, a personality from Braila who was involved in numerous educational initiatives, also writing the translation of Charles Gide's Salary and also having a close relationship with the French cultural world, reveals through his correspondence the many facets of the interwar intellectual world and the exchange of ideas and objects that could be collected, stamps from the classical period. From the correspondence with Maurice Donnay we learn about the stamps appreciated by Maurice Donnay and the stamps received from Romania, as well as the debates surrounding the play Lysistrata. The letters written by Nicolae Eremie bring a new perspective on the texts, because we have his personal notes on the letters, and the meditations on the epistolary poems that he had written.
