Summary/Abstract: In villages of North Herzegovina, several types of dwelling storey-houses have beenbuilt in the past. Most common, typical traditional storey-house of the region – a storeyhouse of Upper Herzegovinan type – was to the full extent adapted to its natural milieu, and to a way of life and economy of local population. As, in course of recent field researches, very interesting samples of this type of storey-houses have been found, and since no word of it has been written in professional literature yet, this contribution is mostly concerned with architectonic characteristics of this type of storey-house. The typical form of Upper Herzegovinan type of storey-house is a building made of stone or stone and wood, of rectangular foundation, and longitudinally placed along a slope so that in one part has three stories, and in the other only two. It is characterized by very simple space structure, common in rural houses in Dinaric cultural area. It is a form of which basic conceptions and dispositional elements of wooden and stone houses have been interwoven. Stone or predominantly stone as a material in this type of house is accompanied by ground plan disposition, specific highs, and space conception, which represent characteristics of wooden house of upland region of Bosnia. In the course of gathering the material in the field, and its presentation in this work, particular attention has been paid to preserved examples that were built, partially or wholly, at the end of 18th or in the beginning of 19th century. They are especially interesting for study of genesis of the dwelling house in our country, since they enable us to broaden the knowledge of the culture of housing in rural environments, and of construction in general, concerning a period of time for which, so far, only few authentic data were available.
