Summary/Abstract: Life-span psychology paradigm suggests that the transition to adulthood can be a particularly stressful period for people with neurodevelopmental disorders (including those with autism) and their relatives, carers, and close acquaintances. The main goal of the presented qualitative research was to enrich knowledge and understanding of the subjective perspective of non-neurotypical people. How autistic people deal with their idiosyncrasies and difficulties, how they cope with adversity in everyday relationships, and how they go through developmental tasks can be extremely useful in developing individualized programs for support and therapy. Data from individually conducted interviews with young people and adults with autism, their relatives, and specialists who work with them are presented. The data analysis was done by the three authors according to the method of interpretive phenomenological analysis. Three closely connected themes (Identity and Self-Perception; Social Interactions and Relationships; Functioning) relevant to the challenges that non-neurotypical people and their families face beyond adolescence are presented in the article.
