Summary/Abstract: This paper provides an interpretation of the poetic flows on the territory of the South Slavs in the period between the two world wars, with special emphasis on the breakthrough of avant-garde codes into the Montenegrin poetry of the time. The cultivation of epic poetry as a literary genre representing the Montenegrin model of thinking and living, as well as the romantic experience of the world – in addition to propositions imposed by the romantic method of creation – did not create ideal conditions for a breakthrough of innovative models in the realization of poetic material. On the contrary, under such circumstances, it was difficult to create an anti-traditional concept. Depersonalization of the lyrical subject, aesthetic prevaluation of literature in which there is no propensity for affinity, resemantization and desemantization as methods of breaking the traditional canon, and finally oneiric tendencies, are all features of avant-garde isms that were known not to be fruitful in the Montenegrin interwar period, although anti-traditionalism still found its place through the actions of particular artists. Different verse organization, creation of strophes, exclamative phrases, the introduction of rhyme into a minus process, and the reduction of punctuation are all expressionistic reflexes which are recorded in our country too. In addition, the presence of certain surrealist codes, particularly in the work of Risto Ratković, evidence the existence of avant-garde codes in Montenegrin poetry in the period between the two world wars.
