Summary/Abstract: In Selimović’s novels a distinctive concept of creation is established. Eastern artistic experience and European orientation of spirit and reason defies the protagonists, who are caught in a closed tragic conflict and permanent discord with their own selves and the world around them. Selimović combines Islamic and Christian codes by incorporating Eastern motif varieties into Bosnian cultural heritage, while using Western patterns for the writing of fiction. His heroes are supranational verbal constructions, and their ways of life and thinking are in opposition to social canons. They live on a border between worlds, in a multiconfessional environment. This results in a reversal of the hierarchization of their culture, making their quest for positive values painful and difficult. Selimović’s hero therefore builds his own culture – a semiosphere fortress where his humanization takes place through complete alienation. The view of wording cultivated by the protagonists provides evidence of distinctive character traits within them, as they regard the written word as asacred and permanent answer to all questions. Through Selimović’s desire touse the written word to communicate with the reader, a system of signs with positive connotations is manifested.
