Summary/Abstract: The first fictional effort made by Branko Ćopić was written largely by the rules of socialist realist poetics, and is, therefore, understandable as a way of imitation of reality, as well as the existence of the acting forms by which the novel was organized. This results in the principle of pars pro toto as a social realist coordinate, proving that fictitious material designed in the novel can be grounded in a real-life model and vice versa, proving that the depicted world or some of its parts can be used as an identification model to the audience, which also means that this creation realizes cathartic features. Although the characters of the novel Prolom are the bearers of typological literary determinants, as well as of the social and cultural development of Yugoslav literature of the time and the carriers of the archetypal collective consciousness they are strong individuals with a peculiar objectification, but also the subjective perception of the world's most tragic period of history – World War II. All the protagonists and antagonists of the novel spatially belong to the Bosnian interior, which is characterized by intense confessional overtaking and intolerance, so it is clear that the objective of the author was to depict a small Bosnian man and his role in the historical causation.
