Summary/Abstract: Following the forced establishment of a school in the period of the reforms ordered by Emperor Joseph and its short existence, in the first half of the 19th century the supervising educational authority patiently tried to secure sustainable resources for the operation of a regular public school in Vodice. Apart from the fact that the sexton, Jakob Plevel, was not trained as a teacher, the main problem was the reluctance of the population to provide the legally required income and to furnish a classroom according to the valid regulations. When the aged sexton’s death removed the last objections to postponing the start of public education, the local curate, in his sermon, joined the effort to convince people about the benefits of schooling. The Diocesan Consistory ordered that a teacher be appointed based on the promise and assurance of the town and parish presidency that all legal requirements for the school’s operation had been met. However, during the first school year, 1853-1854, a number of irregularities were discovered regarding the teacher’s income, the classroom and the teacher’s residence, and as a result there was no public schooling for the following school year. The Consistory did not send a new teacher to Vodice until the irregularities had been rectified.
