Summary/Abstract: The article compares the histories of two distinct but interconnected examples ofgenocide: colonialism in North America and the Holocaust. The authors – a daughterof survivors of Canadian residential schools and a daughter of a Holocaust survivor –jointly reflect on the history of gendered violence as a tool of war, genocide, and culturaldestruction, viewed through the lens of material evidence housed in the United StatesHolocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian inWashington, D.C. They consider the role of exhibited photographs, clothing, everydayobjects, and cultural heritage items in both conveying ideas about sexuality and genderin contexts of extreme danger as well as in preserving cultural identity and fosteringspiritual resistance among members of endangered communities.
