On the Significance and Limits of Pierre Bourdieu’s Critique of Heidegger

Summary/Abstract: There is a striking discrepancy between (a) Bourdieu’s contention to have carefully studied Heideggerґs work and to have been substantially inspired by this, and (b) his criticism not referring to this or that aspect or argument, but to Heidegger’s philosophy as such (being a prototypical example of that arrogant scholasticism going back to Plato himself). Bourdieu’s self-limitation to a purely sociological perspective appears to be highly unsatisfactory regarding the fact that his own considerations on the relation between theoretical and practical logic, and also on the idea of „reflexivity“, would have gained a lot from what Heidegger had to say on the matter.
