Generalized Weberianism? Reflections on the Latest Reception of Max Weber

Summary/Abstract: The reception of Weber's work has become so ubiquitous and at the same time so affirmative that one is inclined to see a kind of generalized Weberianism dominating and pervading present day sociology. But such a view would be misleading and even preposterous: Weber's thinking does not provide the social sciences with ready-made answers (as Marx was supposed to have done) but with a whole series of intellectual challenges and unsolved, probably unsolvable, problems. This holds true with regard to methodology as well as to the diagnosis of modem culture and its antinomies, and to the relationship between sociological concepts and insights on the one hand, and cognitive, moral, and motivational prerequisites of social life world and political praxis on the other.
