Summary/Abstract: It is only in modern, that is to say: functionally differentiated and secularized societies, that something like a sociology of religion could arise and develop. Functional differentiation, though, means that societal spheres like the economy, politics, science and also religion become more and more autonomous and self-referential. How then external references, e.g. between science and religion, religion and politics, are possible, and that particularly when some sort of inter-systemic communication and understanding is needed or intended? Part of this question is if and how a socio-logy of religion is possible which corresponds to the standards of scientific objectivity as well as to the peculiarity of what religion is all about. It is shown, that Max Weber’s analyses and methodological reflexions are fragmentary, unclear, and ambivalent in this very regard.
