Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present, to those Romanian and foreign linguists who are less familiar with the Balkans, a few fundamental elements of the extremely complicated and tortuous issue of creating regional and minority languages (such as the Macedonian language). The "Macedonian Case" is exemplary for several languages that are currently going through an accelerated autonomisation process within the European zone. The first part of this contribution outlines the geographic, historical and political framework within which the standardisation of the literary Macedonian language became official (starting in 1944). The second part will focus strictly on the linguistic aspects of this process.
